I was at a party, and more than one person asked me for advice buying a new computer. Here’s what I told them and I thought I would share.

Are you sure you need a new computer? This is not popular advice, but I honestly believe that most people don’t need a new computer. The main reason people purchase a new computer is because the old one is slow. The first question is whether they might want to save the money and get the old one running faster. It’s not just the money. You usually lose a day getting the new computer running like you want with all of your files moved to the new one.

Fake AntiVirus At Epidemic Proportions

strangled

Strangled by trojans, each week I see systems brought to a standstill. Sometimes it’s a neighbor and sometimes it’s a friend, but the story is always the same. “A popup said I was infected so I tried to remeove it. Now I can’t download anything. The program said it would help, but it didn’t.” They look real, mimicking Microsoft or well known AntiVirus products. The names sound ligitimate, calling themselves AntiVirus 2009 and such.

If you have been following the news, the social media web site Twitter was compromised last month. These are exciting times in the world of computing, and portables are seeing all the action. One thing that is becoming obvious is that the line between netbook and notebook is starting to blur. Netbooks are becoming more powerful and Notebooks are becoming lighter, and longer lasting. Shown below are your picks for Most Loved Notebooks. Keep in mind that Netbooks have been filtered out of these results and were the category we used to kick off the Most Loved series. You can find those results in the previous July Newsletter or by looking for previous articles in TechTalk.

Twitterspeak: OMG RTM@WPC

July explodes onto the scene as reports of Windows 7, version 7264 flood the internet. Why the excitement, what’s different about this version? Well, first off the beta and RC1 license keys that have been so abundantly supplied by Microsoft, will not activate the software. This is a sure sign that the RTM release day is close. Additional evidence is noted by changes in the EULA. All references to “development” have been removed, and while there are other more subtle changes, these are enough for me.
