oncomputers

By Harry McCracken

Sixteen questions (and answers!) on the new, almost-finished version of Microsoft’s next OS.

Windows 7 is here–sort of. Yes, Microsoft still isn’t talking about when it’ll ship the final version–all evidence suggests it’ll be sometime this Fall–but the company is unleashing the Windows 7 Release Candidate today. It’s a free, all-but-final version of the operating system, and it’ll work until March 1st, 2010 before Microsoft forces you to uninstall it or overwrite it with a paid-for copy of the final edition. In short, if you’re itching to give Windows 7 a try, you can.

ASK THE PROS 2009 Laptop Drives

Things have picked up in Ask The Pros this month. It makes me think that many of us are upgrading our systems as opposed to passing them along and replacing. I know I’m using the same system I had two years ago and for me that’s a long time.

That brings us to a question from Mary. She’s beating all around the edges of a problem I ran into last year. All I wanted was to upgrade to a newer, faster laptop drive. As usual, it didin’t turn out to be that easy.

This is the Ultimate version and is due to “expire on June 1, 2010, and the bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1, 2010“. I’m still unsure how the bi-hourly shutdown works, but whether twice hourly or once every two hours, I’m sure it will be irritating enough to push those of us using the OS to buy or drop back. As much as I’ve enjoyed the Windows 7 betas, I’m sure I’ll be buying and moving up.

How many files do you have on your computer? You probably have too many, and you probably have a lot of duplicate files. Finding those duplicate files can be a challenge without the right software. Another busy week for ASK THE PROS. Some interesting questions that cover a lot of ground so let’s get to it.

Q. K. Woods asks: How do I make a bootable disk with an ISO file?

A. Thanks K. Woods, You are correct, an ISO image or file is used to make a bootable disk. It’s a CD image file that instructs your system to give a prompt to boot to CD when installing operating systems or anything that needs a bootable disk. They are also commonly used for Games.

A Beginners Guide To Choosing Processors

Intel’s latest announcement describing the new Stars rating system has me questioning what’s changed in the way of judging processors by their specifications.
Maybe if I redefine what a processor is, that will help me focus on what I’m looking for when making a purchase.

The job of a processor is to execute program instructions which perform functions. These instructions come in the form of software, so basically a processor interprets software. How well it does this is determined by its architecture or its internal design. Intel and AMD describe this internal design with names like P4, P III, i7, and so on. Within these architecture types are family names like Nehalem, Centrino, and Sempron.
