The term is used to denote two specific periods of time: the competition between market-dominating Netscape Navigator and its eventual defeat by Microsoft Internet Explorer during the late 1990s, and the competition from 2003 onwards between the dominating Internet Explorer and several other emerging browsers including Mozilla Firefox, Safari, Opera and, since mid-2008, Google Chrome.” I couldn’t agree more, so now it’s time to look again at browsers and their respective performance. Windows 7 Beta Updates Available
Starting Monday Feb. 24th 2009, updates are available for those lucky souls using Windows 7 Beta. The updates can be found by going to Start/All Programs/Windows Updates, as they are not being announced or installed via Automatic Updates. It must be done manually.
Reports that the updates don’t change anything and are only a “pseudo-refresh†seemed somewhat inaccurate. â€Starting February 24, we will be releasing up to 5 test updates to PCs running the Windows 7 Beta (Build 7000) via Windows Update. These updates allow us to test and verify our ability to deliver and manage the updating of Windows 7. We typically verify servicing scenarios during a betaâ€, said Brandon LeBlanc. Instead of the “up to 5†announced updates, I was presented with 35 suggested updates which downloaded and installed in approximately 25 minutes.

Some Whine With Your Beta?
IE8 Beta is gone and hopefully replaced by an improved RC1. A browser capable of remembering passwords doesn’t seem like too much to ask. With any luck at all the tabbed browsing and other improvements will be worth while because the browser will be able to render pages and do the small things that so far have escaped recent Internet Explorer releases.

Windows 7 Beta Takes the Test
It’s here, it’s public and it’s time to give it a spin. My Windows 7 64bit download was fast and uneventful. While it was downloading I dropped a new hard drive into my existing work box.The system is a couple of years old now and was built using a MSI P35 neo motherboard, Q6850 Intel Quad core, 2 gigs of memory and a once decent 8800GTX vid. card. A nice box when new, but now showing it’s age. I’ll need to double the memory for this to really be ready for Windows 7 and 64 bit computing, but I can add that later. When Vista first appeared I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. It didn’t take long before I realized it was not ready for prime time. It lived quietly on my laptop while recovering from its UAC-pendectomy.
