ProAm Phishing Event Held at…

Thursday May 15th, 2009, Facebook was again hit by a phishing attack. Facebook says it responded quickly to block fake links being shared on the site. Attacks came in the form of “Wall Posts” and inbox messages. The above link to their recent blog gives more information on the steps they have taken.

From what I gather you might also receive an email with the subject “Hello”. If you open it and click on the link, you’ll be taken to a Facebook Look-a -Like page. You might see a name containing 151.im or 121.im. Don’t open it, don’t click on it, don’t put in your name and password.

Maybe Facebook doesn’t hold the most sensitive of information around, but it’s obviously important to someone. I’m sure all the regular methods will be used to make money form our forever lost and probably now well worn information.

Netbooks – Who’s Using Them?

Netbooks – those ultra small portable PCs – are they a niche product, a passing fad or an up and coming product just in its infancy? PC Pitstop analyzed the prevalence of netbooks that ran our on-line diagnostic scans during Q4 2008 and Q1 2009. For the purpose of our analysis, we looked at processor descriptions as well as the display size for portables. For the most part, we found that the netbooks usually contained the IntelÂ® Atomâ„¢ processor. We also set a filter for portable display size of less than 11 inches for the purpose of our analysis.

We’re coming into the home stretch for the release of Windows 7. Tuesday May5th, Microsoft made available Windows 7 RC 1 for everyone to download. In an attempt to avoid a server jamming rush there are no time limits on how long you have to download this release. There are no limitations on keys available and the servers are giving good to great download speeds.

Want to become a member of TechNet ? You will find information and a link for registering. The release candidate is available in 32 bit, 64 bit and multiple languages.

This is the Ultimate version and is due to “expire on June 1, 2010, and the bi-hourly shutdowns will begin on March 1, 2010“. I’m still unsure how the bi-hourly shutdown works, but whether twice hourly or once every two hours, I’m sure it will be irritating enough to push those of us using the OS to buy or drop back. As much as I’ve enjoyed the Windows 7 betas, I’m sure I’ll be buying and moving up.

Intel’s latest announcement describing the new Stars rating system has me questioning what’s changed in the way of judging processors by their specifications.
Maybe if I redefine what a processor is, that will help me focus on what I’m looking for when making a purchase.

The job of a processor is to execute program instructions which perform functions. These instructions come in the form of software, so basically a processor interprets software. How well it does this is determined by its architecture or its internal design. Intel and AMD describe this internal design with names like P4, P III, i7, and so on. Within these architecture types are family names like Nehalem, Centrino, and Sempron.

Getting the fastest was just a matter of buying the most recent architecture with the highest clock speed. With sales approaching only 400,000 units in 2007, netbook sales exploded in 2008 reaching 11. 4 million units. Small, light, and super-portable are the catchwords describing a netbook. Definitions vary but the determining factors are price and size. Generally they have a screen size of 10″ or below, a reduced power/performance processor with 1.0 and 1.6 gig. the most popular of sizes. Price is dictating the use of limited amounts of memory but drive size has been creeping up.
