Hackers Breach Kansas Non-Profit Center, Locking Files for Ransom
Cyber criminals were able to breach Kansas non-profit facility, East Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging of Ottawa, Kansas. The hack occurred in September and took a full two months to fully investigate. The hackers were able to execute a successful breach of the non-profit agency, which led to accessing and locking files which included personal data of those who use the facility. The information accessed includes names, dates of birth, address, phone numbers, social security numbers and Medicare numbers. Although, the data was accessed, the center believes none of the information was taken by the hackers.
The Kansas non-profit was able to restore the files using their backup systems. They have also encouraged individuals who use their services to monitor their credit and financial data. The facility did not report offering free credit monitoring services. Instead, they’re asking those impacted to use the FTC and the three major credit reporting agencies to monitor their information. East Central Kansas Area Agency on Aging’s executive director, Elizabeth Maxwell made the following statement to The Ottawa Herald,
“We take very seriously our role of safeguarding your personal information and using it in an appropriate manner and have increased our cybersecurity measures for our computer system. We apologize for any stress and worry this situation may cause you, and we are doing everything we can to rectify the situation.”
