FTC Offers 25K For IoT Security Program

WANTED: IoT Security Program

The Federal Trade Commission has offered a $25,000 prize to developers who are able to create a security platform for Internet of Things (IoT) devices.  Why?  Because these devices are highly unprotected.  When developing the latest smart TV, nanny cam, or home security devices, developers rarely think about hackers.  The issue of non-existent security solutions for the IoT devices has been clear for quite some time.  However, after a smart TV was recently held for ransom by cyber criminals, a new push is being made.

According to USA Today, the FTC sponsored contest begins in March and the final deadline is May 22, 2017.  The overall goal is for participants to create a solution to keep IoT devices up to date with the latest security updates for said devices.  The FTC believes this could be an external device, which customers add to their smart devices, or a cloud-based solution such as an app.

Regardless of how it comes about, it is most certainly a need.  Good luck to all participants!
