Clients’ Secret Emails Revealed After Deloitte Hit With Cyber Attack

Major Accountancy Firm Suffers Cyber Attack

Cyber criminals infiltrated one of the world’s “big-four” accountancy firms, Deloitte.  It is believed the attacks wormed into the system in November or December of last year and remained undetected until March of 2017.  During this time, the hackers were able to access the company’s email systems, and potentially obtained usernames, passwords, IP addresses, architectural diagrams for businesses and health information.

The Guardian reported roughly 5 million emails were potentially exposed; however, Deloitte officials stated only a fraction of these emails were impacted.

The company reported they have already notified all potentially impacted organizations.  The company is also working with third-party organizations to identify who is behind the attack.  The investigation includes attempting to reverse engineer the attack, to locate where it came from.  Security experts also believe they were able to replicate the cyber attack to determine what information was available to the hackers.

Although the impact appears to be minimal, the company has taken a major hit to its ego.  The firm provides tax consulting, auditing, and cyber security services to major businesses, including government agencies.  To be the company that provides cyber security services to major organizations, and be hit with a cyber attack themselves — may cause serious damage to the Deloitte’s reputation.

A Deloitte spokesperson reported,

“We remain deeply committed to ensuring that our cyber security defenses are best in class, to investing heavily in protecting confidential information and to continually reviewing and enhancing cyber security. We will continue to evaluate this matter and take additional steps as required.”
