700M Email Addresses Leaked – How Secure Is Your Data?

Millions of Email Accounts Leaked — Again

An estimated 700 million email addresses have been compromised.  The leaked email list was accumulated of previously breached emails.  However, it spread like wild fire when the hackers allowed other cyber criminals to copy the list for their own malicious gain.  This led to over 700 million email addresses and passwords being compromised.  This information being obtained by hackers may lead to the following:

  • An increase in malicious phishing attacks
  • Boost in ransomware attacks
  • Potential for breaching other accounts, as users tend to use the same password for multiple accounts

To find out if your account has been breached, you can visit https://haveibeenpwned.com/.  This website allows you to put in your email address and will confirm whether or not it has been compromised.

The screenshot above explains which sites led to the hack, as well as the information obtained by the hackers.  Beyond this information, users can also opt to be notified if their information is compromised again.

Users are advised to determine if their email addresses have been hacked.  If so, users should change the password associated with the account, as well as any other accounts that may share the same password.
