Is South Carolina a Major Ransomware Target? Another Infection Disclosed…

South Carolina Library Added to List of Ransomware Victims

Just yesterday we reported on the third South Carolina school district that has been infected with ransomware in the past year.  Now, Spartanburg County Library has disclosed they too have been hit with ransomware.  Due to the ransomware infection, checking out books has been proven difficult.  It is unclear what malicious variant infected the systems, although the hackers have requested a large ransom.  According to WSPA News 7, the hackers have demanded a payment of $35,000 to unlock the library’s files.  Whether or not the ransom demands will be met, has not been confirmed.  However, officials have said they are working on restoring the systems.
