Rensenware Wants You to Play — Not Pay

Rensenware Demands Victims Earn Their Files Back

Ransomware, the malicious software that locks your files and demand a payment to retrieve them, was recently taken to a different level.  A new ransomware variant, deemed Rensenware, locks your files and demands the victims play a game, Touhou Seirensen.  Victims have to earn 200 million points on the Lunatic difficulty level, in order to retrieve their files.

Tvple Eraser, the creator of Rensenware, stated the variant was created as a joke.  Tvple Eraser put the code to the ransomware variant online, with no intention of it being maliciously distributed.  However, it was.  Upon infection, the victims are shown the ransomware note seen below.

According to Slash Gear, the malicious code has since been removed.  It was replaced with a tool Rensenware victims may use to obtain their files without having to play the game.
