Ransomware Attacks Target Municipalities in the Midwest

Two More Ransomware Attacks Hit the Midwest

The cities of La Pointe, Indiana and Richmond Heights, Ohio have confirmed they too fell victim to ransomware attacks this month.

Officials for La Pointe have confirmed they have a cyber security insurance plan, which they hope will help to fund the restoration of their systems. The exact ransomware that took down the network systems on July 6th is believed to be Ryuk. The ransom demands set by the hackers remain unclear; however, it is likely they will be paid by the cyber insurance policy.

Richmond Heights city hall too fell victim to an unknown ransomware variant on July 1st. The cyber attack did take down their networks for one day; however, they had current backups and were able to restore their networks without having to pay the ransom demands.
