Vermont Job Link Breach Impacts Thousands
An estimated 200,000 Vermont residents and businesses could be impacted by a major breach that just went public. Vermont Job Link, a web service contracted by the state, was recently hacked. The website is used for residents to apply for state jobs.
According to WCAX News, the state knew of the breach for days, but due to an ongoing FBI investigation, they could not go public with the information until this week. It wasn’t until recently, the state realized the magnitude of the issue.
It has been confirmed, 182,000 residents could have had their personal information exposed. This includes names, addresses and social security numbers. The businesses that used the web service to post jobs are not immune from this hack. Although, the impact for the employers remains unknown. Therefore, it is expected the number of impacted individuals will increase as additional details are released.
Users of the site have begun asking how they know if their information has been exposed. Vermont Labor Commissioner, Lindsay Kurrle made the following statement to WCAX News,
“Unfortunately, cyber breaches are very complicated and it will take us some time to determine who was impacted by this breach.”
