Three Weeks After Ransomware Attack, County Courthouse is Still Recovering

The Luzerne County Courthouse was hit with ransomware on May 25, 2019. The exact ransomware variant that infiltrated their networks has not been disclosed, nor has the ransom demand. However, the county’s IT staff has been working tirelessly to rebuild the networks, and hope to have them back to full capacity this week.

Although the exact variant isn’t being disclosed, county officials do believe the attack was executed from an employee clicking on a malicious link within an email. In an effort to avoid something like this happening again, courthouse staff will partake in cyber security training.

Luzerne County is far from the first municipality to be hit with ransomware. Within the last six weeks multiple cities and counties have been hit, including:

  • city of Edcouch, TX
  • city of Baltimore, MD
  • Hutchinson County, SD
  • city of Laredo, TX
  • city of Lake City, FL
  • city of Washington, PA
