Another School Year is About to Begin — Are You Ready?

I’m not entirely sure how it has happened, but it’s almost August.  Which means, students are getting ready for a new school year.  This includes buying school supplies, which may include a new computer.  But which is the best to meet your child’s needs?

How to find the best PC

There is no clear-cut answer.  As it depends on what exactly they’ll be using it for.  College students will likely need more memory than an elementary kid needing their first PC.  However, here are some of the main things to consider:

  1. Portability – Does the student need the device to be mobile?  Or will they be using their computer in one designated area?
  2. Memory – How much memory needed will likely depend on the length of time they plan to use the PC, and how much they plan to store on the device itself.  Some students prefer to use external storage devices, such as USB sticks to store homework and data.  Others want it on the cloud.  Others may store it directly on the device.  If they plan to do so — buy a PC with plenty of storage.
  3. Processor – Different brands of PCs come with different processors.  Some may be better fit for gaming and some function faster than others.  It is best new buyers do their research on which processor would best meet their needs.
  4. Operating System – There are a ton of different operating systems available; however, if you’re wanting the Windows platform, you will likely only find Window 10.  As of November 1, 2016, most OEMs stopped using Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 and replaced them with Windows 10.
  5. Additional Perks – Some new computers come with warranty, accident protection, Microsoft Office etc.  This is certainly something to consider when purchasing a new computer as these additional perks could have hundreds of dollars in value.
