40k Patients Exposed After Ransomware Infects Eye Clinic

Ransomware Riddles Iowa Eye Clinic

On August 23, 2018, an unknown ransomware variant infected Jones Eye Clinic, located in Sioux City, Iowa.  It remains unclear if the clinic paid the ransom demands in order to regain access to their systems, but months later they’re reporting the attack could have more negative effects than originally thought.  Jones Eye Clinic has said, as a result of the infection, approximately 40,000 patient records were left exposed.

Impacted patients include those who rendered services at the clinic from January 1, 2003 to August 23, 2018.  The data exposed includes full names, addresses, birthdates, dates of service, medical record numbers and general descriptions of the clinic visit or surgery.  Recent reports also confirmed individuals’ social security numbers, insurance status, and claim information also may have been affected.

The clinic is offering a free year of credit monitoring services for all impacted patients.
