Ransomware Took Out Years of Data from Ohio Fire and EMS Station
The Mad River Twp. Fire and EMS station is currently without years of data, after a ransomware attack infected their systems in August. The Mad River Twp. Fire and EMS station is located in Enon, Ohio. Officials reported the encrypted data does not include any personal identification of citizens or employees. They also do not believe the data has been stolen. Yet, at this time, the years of data remains encrypted. The municipality is working with a third-party agency in an attempt to recover the files.
The ransomware variant has not been disclosed, nor has the ransom demand. Although, Chief Elmer Beard stated,
“We chose not to pay for the ransom mostly because based on not only our vendor’s opinion but others if we paid the ransom we may or may not have received a key,” he said. “Another thing that could happen is they give us a key and the data but it could include another virus in there that would lock the data back up.”
