Scammers Portray IRS – Scamming Affordable Healthcare Act Insurance Recipients

It’s not surprising that scammers are once again portraying the IRS.  According to News 4 JAX, scammers are targeting individuals who receive insurance through the Affordable Healthcare Act.  The scammers are emailing, texting, and even sending physical mail to these individuals claiming they owe the IRS money for their insurance coverage.  If you receive one of these emails, it is encouraged you send it directly to [email protected].  Upon doing so, delete the email, and then deleted from the trash bin as well.

Although the scammers are using this as a cash scam, according to KnowBe4, it could soon be used as bait to spread malware.

Here are a few tips for readers to identify fake IRS correspondence:

1. The IRS will not send you an email.  Also, the IRS will also, not call you.  If the IRS does need to contact you, they will do so by mail.
2. The IRS requires payments be made to the U.S. Department of Treasury.  Not the “IRS”.
3. These said payments, will always go to an official IRS processing center.  If you find the address is not an official IRS processing center, do not send a the payment.
4. To determine if you do owe the IRS outstanding funds, you may call them directly at 1-800-829-1040
