Free Software – July 2009 Update

In the third official edition of the PC Pitstop Free Software Report I wanted to respond to request made by several readers in their comments; more 64 bit compatible freeware. Well let me start off by saying that that will definitely be a hefty task considering the fact that finding true quality free software for the 64 bit system is extremely difficult. However 64 bit compatible freeware is definitely out there, and if you guys have some favorites you are currently using feel free to suggest them because PC Pitstop, as well as the other readers, definitely value your opinions.

Although we have made some additions to the list, I would like to inform you guys that a few of the titles we had previously listed actually have 64 bit downloads. For instance, Comodo Firewall is compatible with Windows Vista 64 bit Operating Systems. Also, both Gimp and Paint.Net are compatible with Windows XP and Vista 64 bit Operating Systems. Over the remaining months of 2009 expect to see new versions of several of your favorite programs released with 64 bit capabilities, as developers like Mozilla have already released beta versions of Firefox and Thunderbird.

Okay, now here are the changes between this and the last one. This go around we were only able to find eleven freeware titles worthy of being added to the Worlds best free Software list, and eight were added mainly for their 64 bit compatibility. Compared to our first release the second list received minimum criticism, so we did not feel the need to remove any titles at this time. Unfortunately a lot of the titles being added have extremely low prevalence amongst our users, so this list is sort of like an experiment to find out why prevalence should either increase, or remain the same.

Check-out the new additions to the list followed by the updated rankings for all our free software below:

+ jk Defrag (64 bit)
+ Free Registry Defrag (64 bit)
+ LastPass FREE (64 bit)
+ ESET SysInspector (64 bit)
+ Comodo System Cleaner (64 bit)
+ ProgDVB (64 bit)
+ cutepdf writer (64 bit)
+ Windows malicious software removal tool (64 bit)
+ Recuva
+ Glary Utilities
+ Peerguardian 2
