July explodes onto the scene as reports of Windows 7, version 7264 flood the internet. Why the excitement, what’s different about this version? Well, first off the beta and RC1 license keys that have been so abundantly supplied by Microsoft, will not activate the software. This is a sure sign that the RTM release day is close. Additional evidence is noted by changes in the EULA. All references to “development” have been removed, and while there are other more subtle changes, these are enough for me.<\/p>\n

It’s certain that 7264 won’t be the final version as others have already surfaced, but it’s clear that the previously bantered date of July 13th for the RTM is likely accurate. Sites like Computer World back that theory up with information on the WPC keynote speakers<\/a> scheduled for that mornings Worldwide Partner Conference. This is where we’re likely to see the official announcement.<\/p>\n

Wide acceptance of RC1, Microsoft confirmation of retail pricing, and strong support for Preorder Promotions, continue to keep interest keen on this much anticipated release. Windows 7 Home Premium is reported to be the number one software being offered on Amazon and according to Cnet, is also the number one electronics item for the online retailer.<\/p>\n

The Beta version of Windows 7 has already started it’s slow and painful death which will dramatically culminate on August 1st, 2009. You can still download the RC1 version which will remain active until June 1st., 2010, so you better jump while you can. While you’re at it say “seeyalaterbye” to Vista as it sinks quickly into the depths.<\/p>\n

It’s getting real hard not to take advantage of the Preorder Promotion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In a post to The Windows Blog, Brandon Leblanc quiets some of us restless types, saying Microsoft has yet to sign off on Windows 7. You can read his post here<\/a>. Looks like General Availability is still on track for October 22.<\/p>\n
