This time it was Hutchinson County, seated in Olivet, South Dakota.  Upon investigation of the attack, it was determined hackers used the ransomware variant, Ryuk, to infect the county&#8217;s server.  County officials have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yankton.net\/community\/article_0d5e4634-7dd4-11e9-adfc-37f64cb4fb89.html\">confirmed<\/a>, the server is completed corrupted, and they will be forced to purchase new hardware. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, business has been able to carry on as usual for most departments.  Email systems have remained functional, and for those who are able, they&#8217;ve maintained their duties manually.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time, it remains unclear when the county&#8217;s networks will be fully operational.  The county IT staff is working to rebuild, without communicating with the cyber criminals regarding ransom demands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Attacks<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is far from the first ransomware attack on a public municipality.  In just the last six weeks several city and county offices have experienced ransomware infections, across the nation.  These counties include: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Genesee County, Michigan<\/li><li>City of Greenville, South Carolina<\/li><li>City of Stuart, Florida<\/li><li>Howard County, Indiana<\/li><li>Imperial County, California<\/li><li>Potter County, Texas<\/li><li>City of Washington, Pennsylvania <\/li><li>Hutchinson County, South Dakota<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\nFor a list of ransomware attacks that have already taken place in 2019, you may click <a href=\"https:\/\/techtalk.pcpitstop.com\/2019\/01\/09\/ransomware-attacks-2019\/\">here<\/a>.
