{"id":60944,"date":"2020-04-17T10:56:00","date_gmt":"2020-04-17T15:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=60944"},"modified":"2022-01-25T16:41:25","modified_gmt":"2022-01-25T22:41:25","slug":"employee-cyber-security-hygiene","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/employee-cyber-security-hygiene\/","title":{"rendered":"Employer Networks Left Exposed Due to Employee&#8217;s Poor Cyber Security Hygiene"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Survey Confirms People Aren&#8217;t Practicing Good Cyber Security Hygiene &#8211; And It&#8217;s Impacting Their Employers&#8230;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent study, conducted by <a title=\"Cybersecurity Software\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\">PC Matic<\/a>, dove into the password and <g class=\"gr_ gr_4 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"4\" data-gr-id=\"4\">cyber security<\/g> hygiene of 5,000 computer users.  The results are concerning, primarily for businesses.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Users with poor <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">cyber security<\/g> hygiene often bring these negative habits to work with them.  Unfortunately, for the employer, these behaviors could be detrimental to their network security.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The survey results confirm, 51% of respondents check their personal email while on their employer&#8217;s network.  This should generate a security concern for employers.  Why?  Often times if a breach occurs, it is the user&#8217;s personal email and\/or password that is subject to a leak.  Therefore, personal email accounts are often targets of hackers for phishing scams.  If employees fall victim to a phishing attack from their personal email account, on company networks, the malware could spread to other endpoints and\/or servers connected to the same network. For this reason <a title=\"Endpoint Protection Software\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pro\/endpoint-security.asp\">endpoint security solutions<\/a> or EPP is a must for IT networks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, one in five respondents confirmed, they use the same password for their personal and work accounts.  This in itself is highly concerning because if the employee&#8217;s password has been breached, and they&#8217;re using it in the workplace, hackers can easily use the information to breach the employer&#8217;s systems.     <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Employers Can Do To Protect Their Systems<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Theoretically, this would not be a problem if users were changing their passwords.  But they aren&#8217;t.   Half of all surveyors reported only changing their passwords when they were forced to, while another 24% stated they rarely change it, and 7% reported they have never changed their account passwords.
