{"id":60920,"date":"2019-04-10T09:20:33","date_gmt":"2019-04-10T14:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=60920"},"modified":"2019-04-10T09:20:54","modified_gmt":"2019-04-10T14:20:54","slug":"fin6-adds-ransomware","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/fin6-adds-ransomware\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber Crime Group Moves from Credit Card Skimming to Ransomware"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Russian Hackers Move From Skimmers to Ransomware by Exploiting Vulnerable RDP Ports<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>FIN6, a Russian cybercrime group that has\nhistorically focused on attacking point-of-sale (POS) devices to steal credit\ncard data, is now expanding their portfolio into ransomware distribution.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the last three years, the hacking group has\ntargeted the hospitality and retail industries, successfully collecting\nmillions of data sets from credit and debit cards.&nbsp; It is estimated FIN6 has been paid\napproximately $400 million for the data they have exfiltrated from POS\nsystems.&nbsp; So, why make the leap to\nransomware distribution?&nbsp; It\u2019s even more\nlucrative.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, FIN6 has been found targeting businesses\nwith two different ransomware variants, LockerGoga and Ryuk.&nbsp; Both of these ransomware variants are\nconsidered to be newer threats.&nbsp;\nLockerGoga is the ransomware variant that infected the Norwegian\naluminum company, Norsk Hydro, just last month.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryuk, although not as new, has proven to evade most\nsecurity solutions, making it appealing to many cyber criminals.&nbsp; Ryuk does not infect via executable file; alternatively,\nit runs through PowerShell.&nbsp; It is\nbecause of this fileless attack method, that Ryuk is able to bypass most\nsecurity programs.&nbsp; Ryuk has also been in\nthe news lately for infecting Chicago-based Tribune Publishing, which in turn\nimpacted newspaper distributions nationwide.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is believed since making to switch to ransomware distribution in 2018, FIN6 has been paid millions in ransom demands.\u00a0  Now to the ground breaking question \u2013 how are they doing it?\u00a0 The hacking group has been seen using stolen credentials to access the network through the endpoint\u2019s Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) ports.\u00a0 Once they gain access to the network through the RDP port, the hackers abilities become unlimited.\u00a0 Attackers can drop a backdoor to allow for additional malware to be installed, execute ransomware, disable the antivirus protection, steal intellectual property, and more.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevention<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In order to protect against RDP attacks, users can do two things.  Disable the RDP port, if they are not using it.  Or, if it must remain open for access, users should deploy a security solution that actively thwarts these types of attacks.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PC Matic Pro has made the following product enhancements to block these types of attacks: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>RDP Manager within the portal.
