An unknown ransomware variant infected<\/a> the city’s networks, targeting key hardware and software systems on January 22, 2018.\u00a0 In an attempt to mitigate the spread of the malicious software, the city took systems offline — including their 311 information number.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the timing couldn’t be much worse, as residents lost a key information source in the midst of digging out from a massive snow storm.<\/p>\n It is unclear what the ransom demands were, or if the city paid them to restore access to their systems.\u00a0 Akron city officials did, however, call upon Ohio’s National Guard Cyber Security team<\/a> in an attempt to restore the network.\u00a0 The success of this attempt has not been released.<\/p>\n For a list of ransomware attacks that have already taken place in 2019, you may click here<\/a>.
