{"id":60068,"date":"2019-01-22T09:18:31","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T15:18:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=60068"},"modified":"2019-01-22T09:18:31","modified_gmt":"2019-01-22T15:18:31","slug":"hackers-avoid-google-play-store-detection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/hackers-avoid-google-play-store-detection\/","title":{"rendered":"Hackers Advance Malware to Avoid Google Play Store Detection"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Hackers Find Loopholes to Infect Android Devices<\/h3>\n<p>Hackers have been getting better and better at avoiding detection by traditional antivirus methods.\u00a0 However, now in an attempt to infect mobile devices through the Google Play Store, cyber criminals have gone beyond their traditional means of avoidance.<\/p>\n<p>With traditional blacklist antivirus solutions, hackers just need to develop a new malware variant to avoid detection.\u00a0 If it is a new malware strain, the blacklist won&#8217;t know it is bad yet &#8212; meaning successful infection.\u00a0 However, in the mobile space, it&#8217;s a bit tricker than just creating a new strain.\u00a0 Both Apple and Google Play Stores go through their own testing of the apps that want to be available within these play stores.\u00a0 Making it through detection with malicious activity within the app can be difficult.\u00a0 That is unless you find a loophole.<\/p>\n<p>When apps are being tested for the Google Play Store, they go through a simulation process that uses Android emulators.\u00a0 These emulators do their best to replicate the Android environment.\u00a0 However, they do not include the motion sensors an Android device would include in the real-world.\u00a0 Hackers have learned this and decided to exploit it.\u00a0 The latest Android malware lays dormant if the device is not in motion, making it undetectable.\u00a0 Although, once motion is detected, it proceeds to infect the device with Trojans to steal personal data from the user.<\/p>\n<p>So far, only<a href=\"https:\/\/fossbytes.com\/new-android-malware-uses-motion-sensors-to-stay-hidden\/\"> two apps were found to have this malicious software<\/a> included &#8212; Currency Converter and BatterySaverMobi.\u00a0 Both of these apps have been removed from the Google Play Store.\u00a0 Although the number of downloads for these two apps was not astronomical, this proof is still in the pudding.\u00a0 Hackers are working to find ways around detection.<\/p>\n<h4>Staying Secure<\/h4>\n<p>The best way to avoid malicious activity from executing on your device is through the use of application whitelisting.\u00a0 This technology only allows known safe programs to run &#8212; everything else is blocked.\u00a0 Therefore, it doesn&#8217;t matter if it&#8217;s a new malware variant, it still isn&#8217;t a safe program so it will be blocked.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t matter if it&#8217;s motion sensitive or not, if it&#8217;s not tested and proven safe, it will not run.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about application whitelisting, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/whitelist\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hackers Find Loopholes to Infect Android Devices Hackers have been getting better and better at avoiding detection by traditional antivirus methods.\u00a0 However, now in an attempt to infect mobile devices through the Google Play Store, cyber criminals have gone beyond their traditional means of avoidance.
