The parent company, Valley Health, has sent\u00a0letters to potentially impacted patients.<\/div>\n<div class=\"asset-content  subscriber-premium\">\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<h4>How Did It Happen?<\/h4>\n<p>The investigation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.winchesterstar.com\/winchester_star\/valley-health-sending-letters-to-patients-possibly-affected-by-security\/article_c7497570-a0ae-5e02-ba73-1bca55d28123.html\">revealed\u00a0<\/a>the unauthorized person who breached the system, used the login credentials of a now former Inova employee.\u00a0 The login credentials granted the user access to both medical and billing records.\u00a0 Therefore, the cyber criminal\u00a0had access to data including patient names, addresses, dates of birth, and social security numbers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p>Since the breach occurred, both Inova and Valley Health have tried to improve security measures.\u00a0 Valley Health officials have reported they will be increasing the number of monitoring tools, as well as improving staff training on password security.<\/p>\n<p>Valley Health has also sent out letters to notify all potentially impacted patients of the breach.\u00a0 The letter also included tips on protecting their personal information, as well as an offer for free identity theft protection for those eligible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Major Security Breach Leaves Thousands of Patients Exposed Inova Health Systems,\u00a0a non-profit health organization based in Falls Church, Virginia, was hit with a security breach in September 2018.\u00a0 This breach potentially impacted over 12,000 patients in six different medical facilities.
