Hands Over $148M in Data Breach Settlement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Uber Settles with FTC Over Data Mishandlings<\/h3>\n<p>Late last year, we <a href=\"https:\/\/techtalk.pcpitstop.com\/2017\/11\/22\/uber-fails-disclose-security-breach\/\">reported<\/a> Uber&#8217;s lack of disclosure when it came to their\u00a02016 data breach.\u00a0 Not only did they not disclose it, but they also paid the hackers $100,000 to hide the breach.\u00a0 Approximately a year later officials found out 57 million consumer accounts had been leaked.\u00a0 In addition, 600,000 driver&#8217;s license numbers of U.S. drivers were also breached.<\/p>\n<p>The way Uber handled the breach, resulted in the firing of\u00a0Joe Sullivan, the company&#8217;s chief\u00a0security officer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/09\/26\/uber-to-pay-148-million-in-data-breach-settlement\/\">According to Uber&#8217;s chief legal officer, Tony West,<\/a> the company and their new CEO, Dara Khosrowshahi, have since been working diligently to improve safety and security.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Uber\u00a0expanded a previously proposed settlement\u00a0made with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to include the data mishandlings of the 2016 breach.\u00a0 The FTC agreed to the proposed settlement\u00a0of $148 million.\u00a0 This agreement was with the attorney general of all 50 states, and Washington D.C.\u00a0 The settlement funds will be <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.philly.com\/philly\/business\/transportation\/uber-cases-settlement-pennsylvania-new-jersey-ninth-circuit-loss-california-employee-20180926.html\">distributed to approximately
