{"id":59529,"date":"2018-08-30T09:33:33","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T14:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=59529"},"modified":"2018-08-30T09:33:33","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T14:33:33","slug":"tech-scammers-refunds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/tech-scammers-refunds\/","title":{"rendered":"BEWARE: Scammers Offering Fake Refunds to Steal Banking Information"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Scammers Call Offering Fraudulent Refunds<\/h3>\n<p>There have been several reports lately regarding people receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to work for their security solution provider.\u00a0\u00a0Not only do they work for your trusted security company, but they&#8217;re offering you major refunds!\u00a0 But don&#8217;t get too excited &#8212; it&#8217;s a scam.\u00a0\u00a0These hackers are calling, asking for your payment information so they can process refunds for over payments.\u00a0 They may claim it is for tech support refunds, or that the company is going out of business, and they need to refund you what you&#8217;ve paid.\u00a0 Again &#8212; this is a scam.\u00a0 They only want your banking information so they can commit fraud.<\/p>\n<h4>My Experience<\/h4>\n<p>A while ago I received a call from a 1-800 number, who happened to be a scammer.\u00a0 It was pretty easy to tell they were a scammer for a few different reasons.\u00a0 First, they wouldn&#8217;t state a company &#8212; they just kept saying &#8220;security provider&#8221;.\u00a0 Therefore, once I mentioned a security provider&#8217;s name, they latched on.\u00a0 The scammer went on to say my security provider is going out of business, and they had to process my refund.\u00a0 Another reason I knew this was a scam &#8212; I named a company I don&#8217;t use, therefore I wouldn&#8217;t be privy to any refunds.\u00a0 The scammer then asked for my credit card information multiple times to process the &#8220;refund&#8221;.\u00a0 If this was legitimate, they would have your banking information on file to process the credit to the account.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a basic synopsis of the phone call:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Me: I\u2019m sorry, who are you with?<\/p>\n<p>Scammer: Your security provider.<\/p>\n<p>Me: Which one?<\/p>\n<p>Scammer: The security company is going out of business, and they have hired us to process the refunds.\u00a0 We will need your payment information to credit the account.<\/p>\n<p>Me: But what security provider are you talking about?\u00a0 My house, my computer??<\/p>\n<p>Scammer: Your computer.\u00a0 What is the payment information, so we can issue the credit?<\/p>\n<p>Me: Oh, my computer.\u00a0 McAfee?<\/p>\n<p>Scammer: Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Me: What?! McAfee is going out of business.\u00a0 That is incredibly surprising.\u00a0 I would think I would\u2019ve seen this on the news or something.\u00a0 When did they begin this process?\u00a0 How long will I be protected?<\/p>\n<p>Scammer: I need your card information to process the refund.\u00a0 You\u2019ll be getting over $300 back.<\/p>\n<p>Me: Really?!?!\u00a0 WOW!! That\u2019s amazing \u2014 considering I don\u2019t use McAfee, nor have I ever paid them a dime.\u00a0 So, tell me really \u2014 what did you need that credit card information for?<\/p>\n<p>\u2013He hung up.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4>Reflecting<\/h4>\n<p>As you read above, they\u2019re incredibly evasive and go out of their way not to answer the questions you ask.\u00a0 Honestly, from a scamming perspective, it\u2019s smart.\u00a0 The less they say, the less likely they are to provide the wrong information.<\/p>\n<p>If someone is less familiar with these types of scams, it is entirely possible they tell the scammers their antivirus company name without thinking about it.\u00a0 Like how I mentioned McAfee, but knew it was a scam.<\/p>\n<p>If anyone has received a call like this, please share your story below in the comments section.\u00a0 The more we talk about this, the more aware people will become.<\/p>\n<p>And to PC Matic customers, no we are not going out of business, nor are we offering refunds for tech support.\u00a0 In order to process &#8220;refunds&#8221;, we would need to charge for tech support service &#8212;
