After the City of Atlanta’s ransomware fiasco, one would think other public municipalities, specifically in Georgia, would have stepped up their cyber security game.\u00a0 Apparently, that is not the case.\u00a0 Hackers successfully installed ransomware on the internal systems of Coweta County, located in Newnan, Georgia.\u00a0 This means none of the data housed on external networks were impacted, including their website and payroll.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, several other systems were negatively impacted, including local public safety systems.\u00a0 This forced those agencies to use radio-only communications and manual record-keeping systems.<\/p>\n
The ransomware variant has not been disclosed, nor has the ransom demand.\u00a0 It remains unclear if the county will pay the demands.\u00a0 They’ve reported<\/a> it will likely take several days to get systems back to fully operational.<\/p>\n For a list of ransomware attacks that have already taken place in 2018, you may click here<\/a>.
