{"id":59253,"date":"2018-06-18T14:09:21","date_gmt":"2018-06-18T19:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=59253"},"modified":"2018-06-18T14:09:21","modified_gmt":"2018-06-18T19:09:21","slug":"liberty-life-attempts-to-recover-from-cyber-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/liberty-life-attempts-to-recover-from-cyber-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Liberty Life Attempts to Recover from Cyber Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Liberty Life Insurance Suffers from Ransomware Attack<\/h3>\n<p>Liberty Life insurance, headquartered in Southern Africa, is attempting to recover from a ransomware attack.\u00a0 On June 16, 2018, the organization <a href=\"https:\/\/it-online.co.za\/2018\/06\/17\/liberty-customers-compromised-in-ransomware-attack\/\">notified<\/a> millions of their customers the company had been the victim of a cyber attack.\u00a0 As a result, several emails and attachments that were encrypted.\u00a0\u00a0In addition, there is a looming data breach concern, potentially impacting millions of consumer files.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the potential breach of customer data,\u00a0Liberty is now facing the risk of being fined for breaching the Protection of Personal Information Act.<\/p>\n<p>Although the ransom demand amount was not disclosed, Liberty\u00a0chief executive, David Munro, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iol.co.za\/business-report\/companies\/we-did-not-pay-ransom-after-massive-hack-liberty-15521018\">stated<\/a> the organization is not paying the demand.\u00a0 The ransomware variant also remains unclear.<\/p>\n<p>To avoid potential attacks, such as this, users should:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Implement <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/whitelist\">application whitelisting<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Keep all third-party applications and operating systems updated<\/li>\n<li>Complete cyber security training<\/li>\n<li>Think before you click!
