Ransomware took down networks at the Rockport Town Office, located in Massachusetts, on April 13, 2018.\u00a0 Since, IT professionals have been working overtime to get computer systems working at full capacity and to restore city data.\u00a0 Fortunately, they were able to recover data through the backup systems; however, all information saved on the date of infection was blocked from being backed up, due to the virus.<\/p>\n
The ransomware variant and ransom demand were not disclosed.\u00a0 However, Rockport Town Office officials stated they did not pay the ransom and were able to restore their systems, with the exception of the data stored on April 13, 2018.\u00a0 At this time, officials remain uncertain where the attack originated from.\u00a0 However, local reports<\/a> have confirmed, confidential data remained secure despite the cyber attack.<\/p>\n For a list of ransomware attacks that have already taken place in 2018, you may click here<\/a>.
