{"id":58500,"date":"2017-12-28T15:20:31","date_gmt":"2017-12-28T21:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=58500"},"modified":"2017-12-28T15:20:31","modified_gmt":"2017-12-28T21:20:31","slug":"3-6m-unhackable-pc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/3-6m-unhackable-pc\/","title":{"rendered":"$3.6M Unhackable Computer Coming Soon?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Grant Funding Awarded to University of Michigan to Enhance Cyber Security<\/h3>\n<p>A team of computer scientists and engineers at the University of Michigan were recently tasked with creating an unhackable computer.\u00a0 The funding for the project was awarded to the school by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).\u00a0 The total funding is approximately $3.6 million dollars.\u00a0 With the growing cyber security threats facing today&#8217;s home and business users, an unhackable computer seems like a legitimate idea.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techworm.net\/2017\/12\/unhackable-computer-development-3-6-million-darpa-funding-project.html\">existing concept for Morpheus<\/a>, or the unhackable computer, is the hard drive is intended to be programmed to continuously change file and vulnerability locations.\u00a0 Meaning, theoretically the hacker wouldn&#8217;t be able to locate files to encrypt or steal.\u00a0 Beyond moving the files, the previous version of the file is removed so there is no trace of it existing in a previous location.\u00a0 Also, if there were to be a security vulnerability, it would be consistently change locations as well.\u00a0 Therefore, if a hacker did find it, by the time they tried to exploit it &#8212; it would be moved to another location.\u00a0 This seems great, but there is still a major flaw.<\/p>\n<p>This doesn&#8217;t stop the hackers from infecting the system with malware by exploiting human error.\u00a0 Now, one may think &#8211; even if malware is installed, it won&#8217;t be able to find the correct files to encrypt or corrupt.\u00a0 This may be true for a period of time, but wouldn&#8217;t that lead to cyber criminals casting a bigger net?\u00a0 Also, the user of the computer has to know where their files are stored.\u00a0 If the location is consistently changing, how would could they possibly know where its at?\u00a0 There must be some kind of way for the user to still access the files.\u00a0 If the user can find them, even after consistent shuffling, couldn&#8217;t a hacker?<\/p>\n<h5>What are your thoughts on this?\u00a0 Is this money well spent?\u00a0 Do you think this could replace an anti-virus solution?\u00a0 Or &#8212;
