{"id":58176,"date":"2017-10-20T11:21:12","date_gmt":"2017-10-20T16:21:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=58176"},"modified":"2017-10-20T16:04:02","modified_gmt":"2017-10-20T21:04:02","slug":"lithium-ion-batteries-cause-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/lithium-ion-batteries-cause-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Lithium Ion Batteries Continue to Cause Issues"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Lithium Ion (Li-ion) Batteries Create Problems, Again&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>It comes as no surprise, Li-ion batteries continue to create issues where ever they are placed.\u00a0 In 2006, PC Pitstop <a href=\"https:\/\/techtalk.pcpitstop.com\/2013\/07\/24\/laptops-are-still-exploding\/\">conducted a test<\/a> regarding the safety hazard of Li-ion batteries overheating, causing fires.\u00a0 See the video below.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"Exploding Laptop - Lithium Ion Battery  (Extended Version)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V482lvMRXUg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>In 2013, the company followed up on this risk, hoping something had been done to increase the security measures.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the safety of these batteries had not been enhanced.\u00a0 Over the last five years, Li-ion batteries have been repeatedly making the news for their fire and explosion risks.\u00a0 Several computer companies have issued recalls and public statements regarding the risk of Li-ion batteries.\u00a0 These companies include\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/techtalk.pcpitstop.com\/2014\/07\/02\/sony-recalls-laptop-batteries\/\">Sony<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/techtalk.pcpitstop.com\/2017\/01\/26\/hp-recalls-lithium-batteries\/\">HP<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/techtalk.pcpitstop.com\/2015\/04\/29\/lenovo-expands-recall-over-battery-dangers\/\">Lenovo<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/techtalk.pcpitstop.com\/2016\/04\/01\/toshiba-recalls-100k-batteries-for-melting-hazard\/\">Toshiba<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These issues have raised red flags in the airline industry as well.\u00a0\u00a0Just this week, the Chicago Tribune <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/business\/ct-airlines-laptop-battery-fire-risk-20171019-story.html\">reported <\/a>on the concerns of Li-ion batteries being stowed away in checked luggage, stating<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;&#8230;when a laptop&#8217;s rechargeable lithium-ion battery overheats in close proximity to an aerosol spray can, it can cause an explosion capable of disabling an airliner&#8217;s fire suppression system. The fire could then rage unchecked, leading to the loss of the aircraft.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Beyond computers, concerns have been raised for cellphone manufacturers as well.\u00a0 Most recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/techtalk.pcpitstop.com\/2016\/09\/02\/samsung-note-7-battery-explosions\/\">Samsung <\/a>recalled the Note 7 for safety issues with the Li-ion battery exploding.\u00a0 This led to the Samsung Note 7 also being banned on flights.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the Daily Mail<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-4997486\/35-firefighters-tackle-enormous-Tesla-Model-S-fire.html\"> released a video <\/a>of firefighters struggling to extinguish a fire within the Tesla Model S after a teen crashed the car into a cement wall.\u00a0 Firefighters struggled to put out the blaze after toxic fumes emerged from the burning Li-ion battery.\u00a0 In order to stop the fire, the crew had to cool the battery and cut the energy supply.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lithium Ion (Li-ion) Batteries Create Problems, Again&#8230; It comes as no surprise, Li-ion batteries continue to create issues where ever they are placed.\u00a0 In 2006, PC Pitstop conducted a test regarding the safety hazard of Li-ion batteries overheating, causing fires.\u00a0 See the video below.
