{"id":58115,"date":"2017-10-11T14:41:59","date_gmt":"2017-10-11T19:41:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=58115"},"modified":"2017-10-11T14:50:20","modified_gmt":"2017-10-11T19:50:20","slug":"ransomware-costs-ecmc-10m","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/ransomware-costs-ecmc-10m\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Hospital Dumps $10M to Rebuild Systems After Ransomware Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ransomware completely took over Erie County Medical Center&#8217;s (ECMC) computer systems in April.\u00a0 The malware completely corrupted the systems, and the hackers demanded $30,000 in ransom if they wanted the systems restored.\u00a0 Instead, the medical facility spent approximately $10 million to rebuild its systems.\u00a0\u00a0Roughly half of those funds were the cost of hardware, software, and third-party assistance to rebuild the systems.\u00a0 The remaining $5 million was allocated as damages as a result of the ransomware attack.\u00a0 This included lost productivity, lost revenues, and overtime pay for those who rebuilt the systems.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiercehealthcare.com\/privacy-security\/buffalo-hospital-sinks-10m-into-rebuilding-its-network-after-a-ransomware-attack\">Fierce Healthcare<\/a>, an additional $400,000 will be spent monthly to enhance the facility&#8217;s cyber security.\u00a0 However, with the growing cyber security threats, a misconception has established \u2014 if organizations spend more money on security they\u2019ll get better protection. \u00a0Wrong. \u00a0Regardless of how much money is spent on protection they could still be infected unless they find the right protection. \u00a0But how do they do that?<\/p>\n<h4>Focusing on Detection Rates<\/h4>\n<p>If organizations are going to replace an existing security solution, it\u2019s important to ensure they\u2019re getting a better product than they already have. \u00a0This doesn\u2019t necessarily mean something more expensive. \u00a0When it comes to a security solution, the replacement antivirus must outperform the prior solution. \u00a0A way evaluate performance is to check third party detection testing. \u00a0Users can do so through various third party testing agencies, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.av-comparatives.org\/\">AV Comparatives<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virusbulletin.com\/virusbulletin\/2016\/12\/vb100-comparative-review\/\">Virus Bulletin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It is important businesses do not begin associating \u201cthe best security solution\u201d with what is most expensive. \u00a0For example, ECMC significantly increased their IT budget to get \u201cbetter\u201d security to battle today\u2019s threats. \u00a0Unfortunately, spending thousands of dollars more doesn\u2019t necessarily mean they\u2019re getting better protection.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, organizations need to research security providers. \u00a0Understand, there are several pieces to picking the right security solution. \u00a0First, do you just want an antivirus?
