Attack Leads Hospitals to Suspend Emails"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Unknown Ransomware Variant Infiltrates University College London<\/h4>\n<p>The University College London (UCL) was hit with a ransomware attack yesterday afternoon. \u00a0After the UCL shared their systems had been infected, concerns were raised that another global ransomware attack, similar to WannaCry, was on its way. \u00a0Due to the strong ties between the UCL and the University College London Hospitals, select medical facilities chose to suspend their email operations until deemed secure.<\/p>\n<p>The ransomware attack that infiltrated the UCL&#8217;s network and shared drives remains unknown. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2017\/jun\/15\/university-college-london-hit-by-ransomware-attack-hospitals-email-phishing\">The Guardian<\/a> states,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;It\u2019s not yet clear what specific strain of ransomware hit UCL, but the university is warning that it may be a \u201czero-day\u201d attack \u2013 one not seen in the wild before \u2013 due to the fact that it was not picked up by its antivirus software.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although, this assumption is not entirely accurate. \u00a0Simply because the ransomware bypassed the antivirus software does not mean it was a zero-day attack. \u00a0Traditional antivirus programs function off a blacklist. \u00a0This means, any unknown files &#8212; ransomware included&#8211; are allowed to run. \u00a0Therefore, the phishing attack that spread the ransomware, could have simply had a file attached that was unknown to the security solution. \u00a0Assuming it&#8217;s using only a blacklist, it would allow it to execute. \u00a0To prevent attacks such as these, a <a href=\"https:\/\/cart.pcpitstop.com\/go.asp?id=504631\">security solution that uses whitelisting<\/a> is critical. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/whitelist\">Whitelisting<\/a> programs treat unknown programs as bad, until they can be tested and proven safe.<\/p>\n<p>As of today, the university&#8217;s shared and network drives are available as &#8220;read-only&#8221; to staff and students. \u00a0The estimated time for the UCL&#8217;s servers to
