{"id":56706,"date":"2017-03-28T12:20:08","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T17:20:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=56706"},"modified":"2017-03-28T12:20:08","modified_gmt":"2017-03-28T17:20:08","slug":"pc-reset-vs-restore-point","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/pc-reset-vs-restore-point\/","title":{"rendered":"What&#8217;s the Difference Between System Reset and System Restore?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>System Reset or System Restore?<\/h4>\n<p>Resetting your PC and doing a system restore can both be effective methods to alter your PC to either factory settings or to a previous point in PC usage.<\/p>\n<p>Resetting your PC takes it back to factory settings. \u00a0This means all of your software will be removed. \u00a0You do have the option to keep your files in tact or remove them as well. \u00a0To access this feature, you will need to go Settings &gt; Update &amp; security &gt; Recovery. \u00a0Taking your PC back to factory settings can\u00a0be an effective way to significantly speed up your computer and get back to the basics.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, a system restore can also help boost the speed of your computer. \u00a0A restore can also remove potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) and\/or malware that may have wormed its way into your PC. \u00a0The caveat is, knowing when these issues arise. \u00a0A system restore will take your PC to a previous period in time. \u00a0This could be yesterday, a week ago, or even six months prior. \u00a0Whatever restore point you choose, any new software installations from that period until currently\u00a0could be lost after the restore is complete. \u00a0To create a restore point, or complete a system restore, you need to go to System Properties &gt; System Protection Tab &gt; System Restore, or Create depending on which you&#8217;d like to do.<\/p>\n<h4>Which\u00a0is best for you?<\/h4>\n<p>It depends on what your overall goal is. \u00a0Before doing either, think of what you may be losing. \u00a0If you want to boost your PC speeds, and take it back to &#8220;out of the box&#8221; settings, a reset would do that. \u00a0However, keep in mind you would need to reinstall any programs you use on a daily basis such as Microsoft Office. \u00a0Also, you will need to ensure you reinstall a security program immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I prefer the system restore option. \u00a0I don&#8217;t want to lose everything on my PC, but if I encounter major problems with a program I install I can simply restore my system to a previous date and the program will no longer exist within the PC. \u00a0Uninstalling the program could do the same thing, if the issues aren&#8217;t significant enough to interfere with that process. \u00a0I have also had to use a system restore when I was plagued with a support scam that\u00a0I couldn&#8217;t effectively remove without restoring my PC.<\/p>\n<p>Which do you prefer, and why? \u00a0Drop a comment below!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>System Reset or System Restore?
