In late 2016, the Metropolitan Urology Group<\/a> was hit with ransomware. \u00a0Now,\u00a0Urology Austin, located in Austin, Texas, just released they were hit with ransomware on January 22, 2017. \u00a0Ransomware, the malware that locks critical files and demands a payment from the victim to release the files, has been taking the world by storm.<\/p>\n In this particular instance, the ransomware variant used to cripple Urology Austin was not disclosed. \u00a0The payment amount demanded was also not provided. \u00a0At this time, it remains unclear if the clinic used backup files to restore their systems, or if they paid the hacker’s ransom demands.<\/p>\n According to KXAN News<\/a>, over 200,000 patient files were accessed. \u00a0The information included names, birth dates, addresses and social security numbers. \u00a0It is not believed this information was taken by the hackers, but the medical facility did notify all impacted patients.<\/p>\n To see a full list of ransomware attacks that have taken place in 2017, you can click here<\/a>.
