{"id":56631,"date":"2017-03-14T16:15:57","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T21:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=56631"},"modified":"2017-03-14T16:15:57","modified_gmt":"2017-03-14T21:15:57","slug":"traditional-anti-virus-dont-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/traditional-anti-virus-dont-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Traditional Anti-Virus Programs Don&#8217;t Work"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Why Your Traditional AV Isn&#8217;t Working<\/h4>\n<p>According to a recent study completed by <a href=\"http:\/\/it.tmcnet.com\/news\/2017\/03\/14\/8511265.htm\">KnowBe4<\/a>, your traditional anti-virus alone is not effective in stopping today&#8217;s biggest cyber security threat, ransomware. \u00a0Ransomware is a form of malware that locks your files or entire PCs and demands a payment to unlock them. \u00a0In the <a href=\"http:\/\/it.tmcnet.com\/news\/2017\/03\/14\/8511265.htm\">study<\/a>, KnowBe4 asked 500 organizations the impact, if any, they&#8217;ve experienced due to ransomware. \u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/it.tmcnet.com\/news\/2017\/03\/14\/8511265.htm\">results <\/a>showed 33% of those surveyed experienced a ransomware attack in the last 12 months. \u00a0They also found that 53% of those impacted by ransomware had multiple defenses in place to prevent the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>These statistics are evidence that traditional security solutions do not work. \u00a0Traditional programs use a blacklist approach. \u00a0This means that they stop only known bad files. \u00a0If files are unknown &#8212; neither a known good or known bad file, it is allowed to execute under this methodology. \u00a0That is the problem. \u00a0All malware is not going to be known as bad, until it infects someone and is added to the blacklist. \u00a0Keeping up with malicious files is impossible, because they change constantly.<\/p>\n<h4>Application Whitelisting<\/h4>\n<p>This is why implementing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pro\/whitelist\">application whitelisting<\/a> is critical. \u00a0Application whitelisting uses an alternative detection method. \u00a0Instead of tracking only known bad files, whitelisting will only allow for known safe programs to run. \u00a0This approach has been proven far more effective in blocking today&#8217;s cyber security threats than traditional blacklisting methods.<\/p>\n<p>By only allowing safe programs to run, the ever-changing malware codes will be blocked, because no matter what, they will never be deemed safe. \u00a0But what about malware that is inserted in a known safe program? \u00a0Once a malware executable is placed into a safe program, that changes the code. \u00a0Therefore, it is not a known safe program anymore. \u00a0It must be retested to be allowed to run. \u00a0Therefore, it will be blocked, if indeed malware has been added to the program.<\/p>\n<p>What if this method\u00a0blocks my software from running because it isn&#8217;t on the whitelist?
