{"id":56567,"date":"2017-03-03T10:30:15","date_gmt":"2017-03-03T16:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=56567"},"modified":"2017-03-03T10:30:15","modified_gmt":"2017-03-03T16:30:15","slug":"corporations-boost-bitcoin-supply","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/corporations-boost-bitcoin-supply\/","title":{"rendered":"Corporations Boost Bitcoin Supply in Preparation for Ransomware Attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>Companies Are Prepping to Pay Cyber Criminals<\/h4>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/us-corporations-are-buying-bitcoin-to-quickly-resolve-ransomware-attacks\">Coin Telegraph<\/a>, many corporations are preparing for ransomware attacks by increasing their supply of the non-traceable currency, bitcoins. \u00a0Since bitcoins are not traceable, it is typically the currency of choice by hackers.<\/p>\n<p>Am I the only one who thinks this is absolutely absurd?<\/p>\n<p>Malware attacks of all kinds, ransomware attacks included, happen every single day. \u00a0This should not come as a surprise. \u00a0However, instead of preparing to pay off the cyber criminals, perhaps the company should focus on preventing the attack in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>Malware variants change day by day, hour by hour, even second by second. \u00a0It is understandable that these organizations feel defeated by this threat. \u00a0Although, paying the hackers is quite possibly the worst thing you can do. \u00a0Here&#8217;s why:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You don&#8217;t obtain the decryption key until after you have paid the ransom. \u00a0Therefore, you have no idea if the key will work until after you&#8217;ve forked over hundreds if not thousands of dollars.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;re setting your organization up to be a reoccurring victim. \u00a0If you pay once, you&#8217;ll likely pay again. \u00a0Hackers will exploit this.<\/li>\n<li>By paying the ransom, you&#8217;re simply reinforcing the &#8220;success&#8221; of these attacks. \u00a0Which means the ransomware threats will continue to grow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>After an Attack<\/h4>\n<p>If your business is hit with malware, it could take hours, if not days to get your systems functioning at normal capacity. \u00a0It is understandable why this may create issues for the organization. \u00a0Here are the steps you need to take if you are hit with a\u00a0malware attack of any kind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do NOT pay the cyber criminals<\/li>\n<li>Notify local authorities<\/li>\n<li>Contact the FBI<\/li>\n<li>Initiate the company&#8217;s disaster recover plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These companies are literally planning for when their security solution fails them. \u00a0It is great to have a disaster recovery plan in place, in case this does occur. \u00a0In fact, it is encouraged. \u00a0However that plan, should not include paying the hackers. \u00a0Perhaps it is time to find another anti-virus program. \u00a0Maybe one that actually blocks malware attacks from occurring in the first place.<\/p>\n<h4>Application Whitelisting<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pro\/whitelist\">Application whitelisting<\/a> has been<em><strong> PROVEN<\/strong><\/em> effective in blocking almost 100% of malware attacks, including ransomware. \u00a0In the most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.virusbulletin.com\/virusbulletin\/2016\/12\/vb100-comparative-review\/\">Virus Bulletin Reactive and Proactive (RAP) test<\/a>, PC Pitstop&#8217;s application whitelisting engine, used in <a href=\"https:\/\/cart.pcpitstop.com\/go.asp?id=504631\">PC Matic<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cart.pcpitstop.com\/go.asp?id=504632\">PC Matic Pro<\/a> and<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/msp\/\"> PC Matic MSP<\/a>, blocked 99.97% of malware attacks from executing. \u00a099.97%. \u00a0That is impeccable, considering the average proactive detection rate for all participants in the test was 64.35%. \u00a0With an average like that, it&#8217;s understandable why organizations are preparing for their anti-virus solution to fail them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Companies Are Prepping to Pay Cyber Criminals According to Coin Telegraph, many corporations are preparing for ransomware attacks by increasing their supply of the non-traceable currency, bitcoins. \u00a0Since bitcoins are not traceable, it is typically the currency of choice by hackers.
