The Fight Against Cyber Crime<\/h4>\n

As of January 1, 2017, the state of California began enforcing a law which treats ransomware as a form of extortion.\u00a0 Wyoming also has a similar law, and Maryland is considering adopting a law<\/a> specific for the growing cyber crime, ransomware.\u00a0 Prior to these laws, if a ransomware developer or distributer was arrested, the criminal justice system did not have\u00a0appropriate guidance\u00a0for charges and standard sentencing.\u00a0 Now, in certain states they do.<\/p>\n

This is great, it really is.\u00a0 But–what about actually catching the cyber\u00a0criminals?\u00a0 They have to be caught to be charged and sentenced, right?\u00a0 Well, what are authorities doing to catch them?\u00a0 This is where there seems to be a gap.\u00a0 I cannot tell you how many times I have read an article about a ransomware attack and it has stated that although local and government officials have been informed, there is little they can do.\u00a0 There are two reasons for this.\u00a0 First, many of these attacks originate overseas.\u00a0 Second, the cyber criminals are meticulous about covering their tracks.\u00a0 Barrier, yes.\u00a0 Excuse, no.<\/p>\n

So what can authorities do?<\/h4>\n

Honestly, I don’t have an answer — but there has to be something, right?\u00a0 Recently, a Bulgarian man <\/a>was extradited to the U.S. for allegedly distributing the ransomware, GozNym.\u00a0 He is still awaiting trial.\u00a0 But what about the thousands of others who are committing these crimes?\u00a0 Are officials focusing on them?\u00a0 Perhaps they’re looking only for “the big fish”.\u00a0\u00a0But how does that impact the\u00a0victims?<\/p>\n

The concern is, if the ransomware victims feel as though\u00a0law enforcement won’t do anything regarding the attack, they will choose not to report\u00a0future attacks.\u00a0 In a recent survey completed by\u00a0over 450\u00a0Tech Talk<\/a> guests, 20% stated they would not bother reporting a ransomware attack to the FBI.\u00a0 Would you?<\/p>\n

Failing to report the cyber\u00a0crimes is\u00a0not going to help\u00a0matters.\u00a0\u00a0Reporting the crime\u00a0will not make tracking down the cyber criminals any easier; however, it will help\u00a0authorities determine the magnitude of the issue.\u00a0 Although, they should be fully aware of the magnitude, considering ransomware payments hit the $1 billion mark in 2016 and ransomware attacks increased by 167%<\/a> from 2015 to 2016.<\/p>\n
