You may have heard about the recent\u00a0security breach that impacted fast food giant, Arby’s<\/a>.\u00a0 The hackers were able to gain access to\u00a0Arby’s systems and obtain\u00a0an estimated 350,000 credit card numbers from customers who visited the restaurant chain\u00a0from October 2016 to January 2017.\u00a0 Last year, Wendy’s, another major fast food chain, was hit with a breach<\/a> along with CiCi’s Pizza<\/a> and Noodles and Company<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0From 2014 to 2015 over 500 of Landry’s Restaurants<\/a> were\u00a0hacked.\u00a0 Other security breaches that took place\u00a0in 2014,\u00a0include Chick-Fil-A<\/a>\u00a0and P.F. Chang’s<\/a>.\u00a0 All of these hacks have one thing in common, and it is quite obvious — they’re each a restaurant.<\/p>\n

Restaurants Continue To Be Targeted<\/h4>\n

So, what\u00a0is making the fast food industry a primary target for hackers?\u00a0 According to PC Matic’s Vice President of Cyber Security, Dodi Glenn, there\u00a0is a specific reason these companies are\u00a0being sought out,<\/p>\n

“Hackers rely on poorly secured systems. Once they get access into the\u00a0company’s\u00a0network, they pivot the attack and go after the\u00a0point-of-sale (POS)\u00a0systems.\u00a0 POS machines are often using older versions of Windows, like XP and Windows 7, and aren’t always updated with the latest security software.\u00a0 Therefore, they are easily breached.\u00a0 Also, many restaurants use the same software, so once hackers find a vulnerability it can be applied to different restaurants.\u00a0 Lastly, POS systems simply process transactions, and aren’t being used like a regular desktop computer.\u00a0 Therefore, things that would trigger the user to believe they have been hacked do not\u00a0exist; for instance, no ransomware messages, slowness of the system, etc.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Taking that into consideration, along with the magnitude of\u00a0transactions that occur within these systems\u00a0daily, you have the hacker’s dream.\u00a0 Think of a vault with hundreds of thousands of dollars in it, and the password is “password”.\u00a0 I’m not saying you would steal it, but\u00a0someone with compromised morals, such as a hacker,\u00a0would.\u00a0 It is the company’s job to make this as difficult as possible.\u00a0 Unfortunately, with the use of outdated POS systems, companies are leaving the doors wide open for information to be breached.<\/p>\n

Arby’s was not the first fast food chain to be breached, nor will they be the last.\u00a0 However, it is time for the industry to recognize the breach trends and start being proactive to secure their customer’s data.\u00a0 In the meantime, Glenn suggests you do the following,<\/p>\n

“It is important you keep a close eye on your\u00a0bank and credit card statements to verify all transactions.\u00a0 If you notice any suspicious or unauthorized transactions, it is imperative you notify your banking institution immediately.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
