Technology continues to advance, as quickly as on a daily basis.\u00a0 It can be hard to keep up with all of Internet of Things (IoT)\u00a0devices, including\u00a0televisions, appliances, watches, phones, tablets, automobiles, and everything in between.<\/p>\n

IoT Devices Lack Security<\/h4>\n

One of the biggest concerns as technology continues to advance, is the lack of security for each of these devices.\u00a0 Late last year, the IoT industry saw its first ransomware attack on a smart television<\/a>, proving just how vulnerable\u00a0these devices are\u00a0when it comes to hackers.\u00a0 Ransomware also recently took down the electronic key system <\/a>at a top European hotel, making room access impossible for 80 hotel guests.\u00a0 With the anticipated growth within the IoT industry, we are left wondering what they will do to increase security measures on such devices to prevent future attacks.<\/p>\n

This year, the FTC is actually hosting a contest<\/a> for IoT security solutions.\u00a0 Individuals are encouraged to submit their security solutions to the FTC for review and the winner will receive a $25,000 prize.<\/p>\n

The reality is, IoT manufacturers have not stressed cyber security when creating the latest\u00a0smart devices.\u00a0 This is not acceptable.\u00a0 According to Media Post<\/a>, by 2021 there will be 46 billion IoT devices<\/a> used worldwide.\u00a0 Assuming\u00a0cyber security continues to\u00a0be a nonexistent priority for these developers,\u00a0that is 46 billion devices vulnerable to attack.<\/p>\n

What to Expect<\/h4>\n

The IoT trends will not slow down anytime soon.\u00a0 We live in a society where people want the latest and greatest of everything.\u00a0 With a demand like that, suppliers will continue to feed the wants of the consumers.\u00a0 However, they need to do so by creating a product that is secure against today’s cyber threats.\u00a0 And if they can’t, we need a third-party solution that can keep our devices safe.<\/p>\n

Until that happens, expect an increased number of malware attacks on these devices.\u00a0 Whether it is ransomware, viruses, or scams.\u00a0 These devices are vulnerable, and hackers couldn’t be more aware.<\/p>\n
