{"id":56159,"date":"2017-01-18T09:57:29","date_gmt":"2017-01-18T15:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=56159"},"modified":"2017-01-18T10:26:43","modified_gmt":"2017-01-18T16:26:43","slug":"fareit-malware-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/fareit-malware-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Fareit Malware Returns With A Vengeance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The malicious software named &#8220;Fareit&#8221; has returned, and with a vengeance.\u00a0 Fareit malware focuses on breaching your computer&#8217;s security, in an effort to obtain critical login credentials.<\/p>\n<h4>The History of Fareit<\/h4>\n<p>This particular form of malware was discovered in 2012, but has continued morphing throughout the years in an attempt to bypass anti-virus protection.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, Fareit focused on obtaining login credentials for website domains.\u00a0 This could be user names and passwords for such things as banking and email accounts.\u00a0 Roughly seven months ago, a new variant of Fareit was discovered.\u00a0 Softopedia <a href=\"http:\/\/news.softpedia.com\/news\/fareit-malware-uses-different-file-hash-for-each-attack-to-avoid-av-detection-493525.shtml\">reported<\/a>,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Cisco&#8217;s Talos security team has <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cisco.com\/security\/talos\/fareit-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">stumbled upon<\/a> a new version of this malware family that behaves like a chameleon, changing its file hash with each infection, even if the file name remains the same.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cisco <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cisco.com\/security\/talos\/fareit-analysis\">reported <\/a>this Fareit variant primarily targeted Firefox login credentials.\u00a0 There was also concerns that this was being used as a pay-per-infection, meaning cyber criminals were paying other cyber criminals to distribute the malware.\u00a0 The more infections a cyber criminal initiates, the more they&#8217;re paid.<\/p>\n<h4>Today&#8217;s Fareit<\/h4>\n<p>The most recent Fareit malware threat is being distributed via a phishing attack.\u00a0 A phishing attack is an email with a malicious link or attachment, designed to make you click on those links\/attachments.\u00a0 This most recent phishing attack includes\u00a0malicious executable disguised as a\u00a0PDF attachment, which includes the malware.\u00a0 Once the user downloads the &#8220;PDF&#8221;, their computer becomes infected and the malware\u00a0scans for any credentials that may be of value.\u00a0 This may range from banking information, various account login credentials, administrative credentials, etc.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Fareit has used phishing attacks to distribute their malware.\u00a0 Months ago <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infosecurity-magazine.com\/news\/fedex-delivery-notices-dropping\/\">InfoSecurity <\/a>confirmed Fareit was being distributed through falsified FedEx emails, which also included a PDF attachment.<\/p>\n<h4>Staying Protected<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Think before you click.\u00a0 Are you expecting this email?\u00a0 Do you know the sender?\u00a0 Are the links going to a secure website (http<strong>s<\/strong>:\/\/)?<\/li>\n<li>Update your operating system (OS)\u00a0and programs.\u00a0 Our computers typically do a decent job of letting us know when things need to be updated.\u00a0 But are we doing it, or are we clicking on &#8220;Ignore&#8221; or &#8220;Remind Me Tomorrow&#8221;?\u00a0 Understandably, it may be an inconvenience to update your PC right that second, but you need to make time to do it as soon as possible.\u00a0\u00a0Program updates are not\u00a0just about getting the latest and greatest features, but also used to patch any security gaps that were found in the previous version.\u00a0 If you choose not to update, you could be leaving the door open to hackers.<\/li>\n<li>Use a security solution that uses application whitelisting in a real-time setting.\u00a0 What the heck does that mean??\u00a0 Using a whitelist to protect your computer will confirm any applications that attempt to execute\u00a0have been tested and categorized as trusted.\u00a0 For example, the most recent Fareit malware cannot execute on a computer using <a href=\"https:\/\/cart.pcpitstop.com\/go.asp?id=504631\">PC Matic&#8217;s security solution<\/a> because the application whitelisting agent, SuperShield, would scan the disguised PDF in real-time and determine it has not been tested and proven trusted.\u00a0 Therefore, it would block it from downloading.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The malicious software named &#8220;Fareit&#8221; has returned, and with a vengeance.\u00a0 Fareit malware focuses on breaching your computer&#8217;s security, in an effort to obtain critical login credentials.
