Earlier today, December 22nd, we received their\u00a0explanation why.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">In a<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.malwarebytes.com\/puppum\/2016\/12\/why-malwarebytes-detects-pc-pitstop-as-potentially-unwanted\/\"><span class=\"s3\">blog post<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">published\u00a0on their website, Malwarebytes listed several claims to explain why they chose to classify our products as PUP\/PUA. All of this despite nearly a decade of PC Pitstop\/PC Matic products and Malwarebytes coexisting on systems all over the world.\u00a0 None of the concerns outlined by Malwarebytes justifies their classification assigned to our products. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Malwarebytes\u2019 reclassification of our products are in response to<\/span><span class=\"s5\">\u00a0our recent article that noted the\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">AV Comparatives test<\/span>\u00a0that highlighted poor detection rates for Malwarebytes.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">1. Malwarebytes concern: &#8220;Claiming that registry cleaning is necessary&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Our product does not claim that a user is infected because of registry issues, it clearly states &#8220;these\u00a0<b>may<\/b>\u00a0cause improper actions by some applications.&#8221; There are also several\u00a0applications that clean the registry just as PC Matic does that are not classified as PUP\/PUA, including BitDefender, AVG, CCleaner and System Mechanic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">2. Malwarebytes concern: &#8220;Claiming that temporary files are problematic&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">Our detections of temporary files do not claim that they are in some way urgent issues, the red dot next to them simply designates an automatic fix being available by our program. Solid State Drives are typically more limited in space than their cheaper and more\u00a0expansive hard drive counterparts. Our user base welcomes any area where we can free up space on the drive\u00a0by removing unnecessary files. Additionally, many vendors offer disk cleanup tools to remove unnecessary files and free up disk space, including: Kaspersky, Norton, Webroot, BitDefender and others that are not labeled as PUP\/PUA by Malwarebytes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">3.\u00a0Malwarebytes concern: &#8220;Claiming that cookies are problematic&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">It is well known that cookies can and do cause privacy issues. Closing this security hole for our customers helps ensure their privacy is protected. Most recently, reports have been released that malicious cookies may have played an integral part in the<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theinquirer.net\/inquirer\/news\/2476914\/yahoo-admits-that-2012-breach-might-include-a-post-hack-cookie-problem\"><span class=\"s3\">Yahoo security breach<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #000000;\">The removal of cookies is not unique among comparable industry products and these products are not labeled as PUP\/PUA by Malwarebytes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">4. Malwarebytes concern: &#8220;No working trial&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">It is our own business decision to not have a full trial available for our product. This certainly does not mean a product is a PUA\/PUP. Additionally, our product PC Matic Home Security is completely free security for up to three computers. This can be used as a great way to trial our product&#8217;s whitelist protection without the optimization features that are included in the full version.\u00a0Malwarebytes also chose to highlight the high price of our product stating that it can cost &#8220;up to $150&#8221; which is the price for a lifetime license. PC Matic is $50 per year for 5 computers, which is cheaper than Malwarebytes Premium at<\/span><span class=\"s4\">\u00a0$79.99<\/span><span class=\"s1\">. The lack of product trial<\/span><span class=\"s2\">\u00a0is not unique among comparable industry products and these products are not labeled as PUP\/PUA by Malwarebytes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">5. Malwarebytes concern: &#8220;Silent removal of necessary applications&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">PC Matic includes an application update function therefore rendering these applications <\/span><span class=\"s4\">unnecessary<\/span><span class=\"s1\">.\u00a0\u00a0With that said, in the time since their blog went live,\u00a0we have\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s6\">adjusted<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0our program<\/span><span class=\"s6\">\u00a0to accommodate\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">the two Chrome applications\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s6\">in question- further strengthening protection for our customers.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0We still plan to\u00a0remove\u00a0the\u00a0unnecessary\u00a0Java Tray Application. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">There are several\u00a0good\u00a0reasons why we remove this application. Java is\u00a0updated by our PC Matic application as well as our real time protection SuperShield, so leaving the Java Tray\u00a0application running simply for updates is an unnecessary waste of system resources. Our update process is also seamless and more effective than the Java Tray app. Because the Java app requires user approval and can be skipped it leads to a lower percentage of updates. Our process is automatic and done in the background so it leads to a higher percentage of users updating and being more secure. Additionally Java updaters can sometimes install toolbars and unneeded\u00a0applications, which we strip out. We also make sure that version updates are handled properly so as to not disrupt the\u00a0experience of customers that use older versions of Java. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">Our process best maintains consumer efficiency and system security.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">6. Malwarebytes concern: &#8220;Silently disabling the Windows Defragmentation Service&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">Our program intentionally disables the Windows Defragmentation Service due to the way\u00a0the\u00a0operating systems\u00a0identifies\u00a0solid-state drives.\u00a0PC\u00a0Matic\u2019s\u00a0SSD identification rules are more accurate<\/span><span class=\"s4\"> and\u00a0defraging\u00a0reduces the life of\u00a0solid-state drives.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0Our customer&#8217;s drives are not left without disk defragmentation, as it is included within PC Matic. We do\u00a0not remove\u00a0our customer&#8217;s ability to defragment\u00a0their drives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">7. Malwarebytes concern: &#8220;Silently performing other potentially dangerous actions&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">PC Matic adds an administrator account to the computer in order to increase protection on the system. This account is used\u00a0only by PC Matic\u00a0to ensure that persistent malware can be removed. <\/span><span class=\"s4\">These accounts don\u2019t perform dangerous actions, but rather increase system protections in real time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">8. Malwarebytes concern: &#8220;High risk security vulnerabilities&#8221;<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span class=\"s1\">These claims were shared with us on December 22, hours before the Malwarebytes blog was posted.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">The 2 vulnerabilities cited were patched within minutes of notification.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">PC Pitstop\/PC Matic are committed to going above and beyond to protect our customers.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\">There is zero evidence that any of the security issues cited &#8211; ever impacted our customers. S<\/span><span class=\"s1\">imilar claims of vulnerabilities in other industry products have not lead to those products being similarly classified as PUP\/PUA by Malwarebytes.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\" style=\"color: #000000;\">With transparency being equally important to us at PC Pitstop\/PC Matic, the intent of this response is to make ALL of the facts public.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s1\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Given the weak rationale behind the concerns outlined here and the fact that similar products are not labeled as PUP\/PUA &#8211; we are lead to believe that the Malwarebytes classification of\u00a0our products was actually motivated by<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/2016\/11\/29\/important-security-test-decade\/\">our recent article<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">that noted the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.av-comparatives.org\/pcmatic-pcpitstop-2016\/\">AV Comparatives test<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">that highlighted poor detection rates for Malwarebytes.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">These accusations have also led to third parties testing and\/or reviewing\u00a0our product, to either confirm or reject Malwarebytes claims.\u00a0 One of these individuals was Tom Lawrence of Lawrence Systems.\u00a0 He reviewed the information provided by Malwarebytes, and compared it to information he found\u00a0from\u00a0PC Matic.\u00a0 Following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=P53AF0atNI8\">fair evaluation<\/a>, he agreed to speak with Dodi Glenn &#8212; Vice President of Cyber Security for PC Matic.\u00a0 You&#8217;re able to view the full conversation here:<\/p>\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container \" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe title=\"A Talk with Dodi Glenn from PC Pitstop about PC Matic,  Malwarebytes &amp; My Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jL7daVzH-oA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Network World also posted an article regarding this issue.\u00a0 You can read our follow-up statements to that article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/2017\/01\/06\/network-world-malwarebytes-pcmatic\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On December 8th Malwarebytes began removing our products as potentially unwanted programs.
