Fake news articles aren’t new.\u00a0 In the past, we have informed readers of various phishing scams, targeting reader’s curiosity with bogus news stories exploiting trending news topics.\u00a0 Now, fake news stories have made their way\u00a0onto major search engine results and social media platforms.<\/p>\n

It’s highly likely\u00a0you have come across a handful\u00a0of these\u00a0articles\u00a0before, whether\u00a0you knew it or not.<\/p>\n

Now, hopefully we can all appreciate this quote.\u00a0 Obviously Abraham Lincoln was not alive when the internet originated.\u00a0 But\u00a0I found a quote, clearly from Abraham Lincoln\u00a0online, so it must be true!<\/p>\n

As a society,\u00a0we are quite na\u00efve about the internet and the quality of the material we find online.\u00a0 According to Tech Crunch<\/a>, 62% of individuals get their news from social media.\u00a0\u00a0This is\u00a0alarming\u00a0because \u00a0it doesn’t take a lot for a false article to go viral on a social media platform.\u00a0 Now these 62% of\u00a0people believe they are getting accurate news, when that is clearly not the case.\u00a0 In many instances, the websites themselves are legitimate, but they are falsifying all or pieces of the\u00a0news story to generate more traffic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It is a bit more difficult for these fake articles to go viral\u00a0on major search engine result pages, such as Google; however, it can be done.\u00a0 This has been proven by the false election results<\/a> page that has been popping up in Google search results.<\/p>\n

One of the most important things you can do, is ensure you are getting your news from credible sources.\u00a0 This means not only looking for the https:\/\/ to ensure the site is secure, also be sure the resources\u00a0rare reputable.\u00a0 With the increase in media outlets, it is a bit more difficult to determine what is reputable and what is not.<\/p>\n
