However, there is another method to try before a full new install, and this is often called a repair install or a refresh depending on the Operating System you have.<\/p>\n<p>In Windows 8 we have a Refresh PC option that allows you to keep your files and personal settings but will reset everything else to factory defaults. Anything that you previously downloaded from the App Store will be removed and will have to be re-downloaded after. It&#8217;s a simple process and we&#8217;ll break it down below step by step.<\/p>\n<p><em>You may want to print out these instructions so you can follow along while the computer restarts, etc.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>IMPORTANT<\/strong><\/span> &#8211; You need Windows 8 installation media to complete this process. This is the DVD or USB that came with your computer. You can also create a USB here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/software-download\/windows8ISO\">Windows 8 USB<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>1.Restart the computer or turn it on and immediately start pressing F8. This will take you into the Windows Recovery Menu.<\/p>\n<p>2. Click on the Troubleshoot option in the list (See photo below).<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54969\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win81.jpg\" alt=\"win81\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win81.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win81-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. In the new list, look for the Refresh your PC option and click on it (See photo below).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54970\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win82.jpg\" alt=\"win82\" width=\"400\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win82.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win82-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. You will now be prompted to insert your installation media. This is in a DVD or USB format.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54971\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win83.jpg\" alt=\"win83\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win83.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win83-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5. After inserting the installation media, your computer will detect it automatically. After it does you can click the Refresh button to start the process.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54972\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win84.jpg\" alt=\"win84\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win84.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Win84-300x223.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>6. Your computer will now start the repairing process and will most likely reboot, don&#8217;t interfere with it until it has completed.<\/p>\n<p>7.
