You can download and run this tool and it will attempt to automatically bring back the hidden files.<\/p>\n<p>1. Download the program from here: <a href=\"http:\/\/download.bleepingcomputer.com\/grinler\/unhide.exe\">UnHide<\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. After it has completed downloading, double click on the file to run it.<\/p>\n<p>3. You&#8217;ve completed the steps for the first method, if it was successful your files should no longer be hidden.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Method 2<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This method is for users who are using Windows 7 or Windows Vista. Scroll down for Method 2 instructions on Windows XP.<\/p>\n<p>1. Check if folder <strong>C:\\Users\\<em>user_name<\/em>\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\smtmp<\/strong> exists. You&#8217;ll replace &#8220;user_name&#8221; with the username on your computer, for instance mine is Devin (See photo below).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54906\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide3.png\" alt=\"unhide3\" width=\"307\" height=\"58\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide3.png 307w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide3-300x58.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 307px) 100vw, 307px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>2. Now that we&#8217;ve found that folder, copy all content of this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Users\\<em>user_name<\/em>\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\smtmp\\1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3. Now navigate to the path below, and paste all of the content from above into this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Program Data\\Start Menu<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>**Important Note Section**<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Start Menu can often be a hidden folder because it is a system folder. In order to unhide it follow the steps below. You may also need to take ownership of the folder in order to access it, the steps below outline this process as well.<\/p>\n<p>1. Open the File Explorer if you don&#8217;t have it still open from above.<\/p>\n<p>2. Go to Folder Options (Getting here may be different depending on if you&#8217;re using Vista or Windows 7, see photo below for Windows 7).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54909\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide4-1.png\" alt=\"unhide4\" width=\"257\" height=\"440\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide4-1.png 257w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide4-1-175x300.png 175w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. Click on the view tab, and look for\u00a0&#8220;Hide protected operating system files&#8221;, <strong>uncheck<\/strong> the box next to it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54911\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide5.png\" alt=\"unhide5\" width=\"393\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide5.png 393w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide5-244x300.png 244w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 393px) 100vw, 393px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now we are going to take ownership of the Start Menu folder.<\/p>\n<p>1. Download the zip file from HowToGeek here: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/TakeOwnership.zip\">TakeOwnership.zip<\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. After the download has finished, right click on the downloaded zip file and choose &#8220;Extract All&#8221; (See photo below).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54914\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide6.png\" alt=\"unhide6\" width=\"620\" height=\"134\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide6.png 620w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide6-300x65.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3. After extracting you should see two entries, one to install and one to remove. Double click the Install file, and click Okay on all dialog boxes that pop up.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54915\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Unhide7.png\" alt=\"unhide7\" width=\"586\" height=\"60\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Unhide7.png 586w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Unhide7-300x31.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 586px) 100vw, 586px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>4. After the file installs you can now simply Right click to take ownership of a folder.<\/p>\n<p>5. Navigate back to\u00a0<strong>C:\\Program Data\u00a0<\/strong>and right click on the folder Start Menu, choose &#8220;Take Ownership&#8221; and wait for the program to run. Move back up above the Important Note section and copy the information from Step 2, to paste into the Start Menu Folder in Step 3. The steps are also below:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>2. Now that we&#8217;ve found that folder, copy all content of this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Users\\<em>user_name<\/em>\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\smtmp\\1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3. Copy all content of this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Users\\<em>user_name<\/em>\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\smtmp\\2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5. Paste it into the following folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Users\\<em>user_name<\/em>\\AppData\\Roaming\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\Quick Launch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOTE. &#8220;Quick Launch&#8221;\u00a0is also a system folder, so you may need to right click it and take ownership as you did with Start Menu.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. Copy all content of this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Users\\<em>user_name<\/em>\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\smtmp\\3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7. Paste it into the following folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Users\\<em>user-name<\/em>\\AppData\\Roaming\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\Quick Launch\\User Pinned\\TaskBar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. Copy all content of this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Users\\<em>user_name<\/em>\\AppData\\Local\\Temp\\smtmp\\4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>9. Paste it into the following folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Program Data\\Desktop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>NOTE. &#8220;Desktop&#8221;is also a system folder, so you may need to right click it and take ownership as you did with Start Menu.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it, you&#8217;re done with Method 2 for Windows 7 or Windows Vista.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Method 2<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Windows XP<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IF folder <strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\user_name\\Local Settings\\Temp\\smtmp<\/strong> exist&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>**Please move to the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">important note<\/span><\/strong> section above in red to unhide system folders and take ownership, then continue with the steps below. If you can&#8217;t access a folder you need to right click it and choose take ownership**<\/p>\n<p>1. Check if folder <strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\<em>user_name<\/em>\\Local Settings\\Temp\\smtmp<\/strong> exists. You&#8217;ll replace &#8220;user_name&#8221; with the username on your computer, for instance mine is Devin. So my path would be\u00a0<strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\<em>Devin<\/em>\\Local Settings\\Temp\\smtmp<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>2. Copy all content of this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\user_name\\Local Settings\\Temp\\smtmp\\1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3. Paste them into the following folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Start Menu<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>4. Copy all content of this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\user_name\\Local Settings\\Temp\\smtmp\\2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5. Paste them into the following folder<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\user_name\\Application Data\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\Quick Launch<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>6. Copy all content of this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\user_name\\Local Settings\\Temp\\smtmp\\3<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7. Paste them into the following folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\user_name\\Application Data\\Microsoft\\Internet Explorer\\Quick Launch\\User Pinned\\TaskBar<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>8. Copy all content of this folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\user_name\\Local Settings\\Temp\\smtmp\\4<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>9. Paste them into the following folder:<br \/>\n<strong>C:\\Documents and Settings\\All Users\\Desktop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it, you&#8217;ve completed Method 2. Download <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/apppaths\/files\/AppPaths.exe\/download\">AppPaths<\/a><\/p>\n<p>2. Double click on the downloaded file\u00a0and choose run in the dialog box that pops up.<\/p>\n<p>3. In the example below we&#8217;ll recreate the entry for the Chrome browser. Right click on the program that needs to be fixed and choose properties (See image below).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-54923\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide11.png\" alt=\"unhide11\" width=\"389\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide11.png 389w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/UnHide11-271x300.png 271w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>5. You will see a properties window open for Chrome, make sure you&#8217;re in the Shortcut tab and find the target box.<\/p>\n<p>6. The Target box will be empty, which is why the shortcut is not working.<\/p>\n<p>7. Click on Apply and OK, and you&#8217;re done! The start menu shortcut should be working again.
