{"id":54770,"date":"2016-10-24T22:04:36","date_gmt":"2016-10-24T22:04:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=54770"},"modified":"2016-10-25T14:44:40","modified_gmt":"2016-10-25T14:44:40","slug":"microsoft-security-essentials-bsod-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/microsoft-security-essentials-bsod-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"Hackers Boost Sophistication With Fake Microsoft Security Essentials BSoD Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Hackers are now using advanced methods to distribute malware&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>Hackers have found new\u00a0ways to copy notifications from what users would consider safe programs.\u00a0 The latest example of this is the blue screen of death (BSoD) that appears after users attempt to download a fraudulent version of\u00a0Microsoft Security Essentials.\u00a0 Microsoft does have a BSoD alert that looks quite similar to the tech support scam BSoD shown below.\u00a0 However, the legitimate screen will not have the last line, offering a phone number for &#8220;support&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-54771 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BSoD.png\" alt=\"bsod\" width=\"383\" height=\"227\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BSoD.png 383w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/BSoD-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft reported any true messages from them will not include support contact information, nor will they ever request payment for providing technical support.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/microsoft-beware-this-fake-windows-bsod-from-tech-support-scammers-malware\/\">ZDNet<\/a>, this form of malware has been named Hicurdismos.\u00a0 Once infected, the malware will disable the Task Manager to prevent the user from terminating the BSoD.\u00a0 Hicurdismos will also hid your mouse curser to make you believe your computer is frozen.<\/p>\n<p>But wait, there&#8217;s good news!\u00a0 Assuming you&#8217;re using <a href=\"https:\/\/cart.pcpitstop.com\/go.asp?id=504631\">PC Matic<\/a>, SuperShield can effectively block this malware, and here is how.\u00a0 Since this is an unsigned piece of malware it will immediately be stopped by <a href=\"https:\/\/cart.pcpitstop.com\/go.asp?id=504631\">SuperShield<\/a>. It may pretend to be a Microsoft file once installed, but<a href=\"https:\/\/cart.pcpitstop.com\/go.asp?id=504631\"> SuperShield <\/a>can see it is unsigned and by a fake corporation, \u201cBlueStackz LLC\u201d and will not allow it to execute. Legitimate Microsoft files are signed by the company themselves, and help to distinguish fake files from real files.<\/p>\n<p>Microsoft SmartScreen will also\u00a0prompt users not to run the program that is infected, since Hicurdismos is not signed with\u00a0a Microsoft certificate.\u00a0 The SmartScreen will provide a message stating running said program could be harmful.\u00a0 Now, this won&#8217;t help if the PC user disregards this message and runs the program anyway.\u00a0 This is why it is important to read the messages that are coming up on your screen.\u00a0 Quite often users are\u00a0too\u00a0eager to click the &#8220;Yes&#8221; or &#8220;Run&#8221; button to get the end result, they forego reading what their PC could be warning them about.\u00a0 It&#8217;s important you
