{"id":54672,"date":"2016-10-10T21:29:41","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T21:29:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=54672"},"modified":"2016-10-19T19:47:53","modified_gmt":"2016-10-19T19:47:53","slug":"nhs-remains-major-ransomware-target","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/nhs-remains-major-ransomware-target\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS Remains Major Ransomware Target"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><b>The National Health Service remains the main ransomware target&#8230;<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>NHS has been identified as the primary ransomware target for quite some time.\u00a0 Several reports have suggested multiple ransomware attacks on the NHS, and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theinquirer.net\/inquirer\/news\/2473560\/ransomware-hackers-are-hitting-the-nhs-in-the-knackers\">recent study<\/a> suggests that won&#8217;t be slowing down anytime soon.\u00a0 With a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theinquirer.net\/inquirer\/news\/2473560\/ransomware-hackers-are-hitting-the-nhs-in-the-knackers\">400% increase in ransomware attacks<\/a>, the NHS needs to be working on advancing their cyber security measures to ensure their information remains secure.<\/p>\n<p>Ransomware attacks have become and epidemic, worldwide.\u00a0 It has never been more critical to ensure proper protection for your endpoints than now.\u00a0 Three proactive steps IT professionals, and home users need to implement immediately are as follows:<\/p>\n<p>1. <strong>Backing up data<\/strong> &#8211; Backing up your data daily is imperative.\u00a0 For home users it may not be as critical to back up as often, perhaps once a week, pending their PC use.\u00a0 Regardless, backing up is imperative.\u00a0 You should not only back up your data, but place it on an external device that can be removed from the PC after the back up is completed.<\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Education<\/strong> &#8211; PC users must educate themselves on current cyber security threats, as well as what to look for to avoid them.\u00a0 Having the ability to identify these red flags makes PC users less likely to become victims.<\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Application whitelisting<\/strong> &#8211; Implementing a security solution that includes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pro\/whitelist\">application whitelisting <\/a>as their primary source of detection will increase your level of protection.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pro\/whitelist\">Application whitelisting <\/a>is an alternative approach to security, compared to the traditional blacklist approach.\u00a0 You can learn more about application whitelisting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pro\/whitelist\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, if you end up finding yourself the victim of a ransomware infection, <a href=\"https:\/\/cart.pcpitstop.com\/go.asp?id=504631\">PC Matic<\/a> encourages you to follow the following five steps:<\/p>\n<p>1. <b>Do not pay the ransom<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 If you do, you\u2019re just giving the hackers a reason to keep hacking.\u00a0 Use your back up files to restore your systems.\u00a0 Again, don\u2019t pay!!<\/p>\n<p>2. <b>Inform the FBI<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 By informing the FBI, they can investigate to potentially bring legal action against the hacker.\u00a0 All cyber criminal activity should be reported to the federal IC3 agency.\u00a0 You can file a complaint with them\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic3.gov\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>3. <b>Notify your current security software company<\/b>\u00a0\u2013 You also MUST inform your security software company.\u00a0 If they didn\u2019t know they missed a malicious attack, they cannot stop it in the future.\u00a0 Also, many anti-virus software companies share their blacklist, or the list of known bad files.\u00a0 So by sharing it with your software company, they then share it with others;
