{"id":54293,"date":"2016-09-06T13:59:27","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T13:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/?p=54293"},"modified":"2016-09-06T14:04:34","modified_gmt":"2016-09-06T14:04:34","slug":"american-express-phishing-attack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/american-express-phishing-attack\/","title":{"rendered":"American Express Text Message Phishing Attack"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>Hackers work through the holiday to send out text message phishing attacks to American Express users&#8230;<!--more--><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Shortly after dinner on Labor Day evening, I received a text message from \u201c417-82\u201d indicating that I should review my American Express profile. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54294 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX.png\" alt=\"AMEX\" width=\"513\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX.png 513w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-300x182.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 513px) 100vw, 513px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>The text message had a link, which utilized a URL Shortening Service, to make the URL smaller, so it fits on text messages properly.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Being the security conscious person that I am, I immediately logged into <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanexpress.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; font-family: Calibri;\">www.americanexpress.com<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">, and checked to make sure everything was OK. It was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Next, I wanted to see where the URL in the text message was redirecting me to. I opened up a browser on my virtual machine, and found that the URL, hxxp:\/\/bit.do\/americanexpress-id, redirected me to hxxp:\/\/mcexclusiveclub.com\/LogonHandler. Once I put in a fake username and password, I was redirected to hxxp:\/\/segurainformatica.com.br\/myca\/logon\/us\/action\/LogonHandlerAcc\/details.htm<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Let\u2019s try to piece together the phishing attack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">We know by visiting mcexclusiveclub.com, that the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.com\/\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; font-family: Calibri;\">WordPress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"> site was clearly compromised by a hacker. The reason we know this, is that when you visit the site, you see an open directory of files. In addition to the benign files, the site also contains the phishing page, plus a file called shell.php, which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.virustotal.com\/en\/file\/15ff961e5cdf07dd54693ba8dc1896baeea3409caf8e01862bc9474a8fc57720\/analysis\/1473119877\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; font-family: Calibri;\">detected<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\"> by several antivirus companies as malicious.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54295 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-1.png\" alt=\"AMEX 1\" width=\"165\" height=\"254\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Compromised website, showing shell.php<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Once the hacker got \u201cshell\u201d access, or direct access to the webserver, he began uploading a website that mimicked the real American Express site. They used the initial site to load the login page, then redirect to another URL, where additional personally identifiable information would be requested. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54296 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-2.png\" alt=\"AMEX 2\" width=\"1486\" height=\"666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-2.png 1486w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-2-300x135.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-2-768x344.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-2-1024x459.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1486px) 100vw, 1486px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>A screenshot of the initial phishing site<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">The site hxxp:\/\/segurainformatica.com.br happens to be running <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.joomla.org\/\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; font-family: Calibri;\">Joomla<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">, a content management system, or CMS. More than likely, the owner of the domain has not updated Joomla and the plugins that it is running, leaving it vulnerable to attacks. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-54297 size-full aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-3.png\" alt=\"AMEX 3\" width=\"1477\" height=\"1029\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-3.png 1477w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-3-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-3-768x535.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/AMEX-3-1024x713.png 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1477px) 100vw, 1477px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>A screenshot of the redirected phishing site<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">If you were to fill in the information on the phishing page, the hacker would receive an email with your username and password, and all of the account information you entered in the form.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">In efforts to reduce the number of people becoming victims of this phishing attack, I pulled up the \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/whois.domaintools.com\/mcexclusiveclub.com\"><span style=\"color: #0563c1; font-family: Calibri;\">Whois<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">\u201d report on the domains, to see if there were any abuse email addresses I could contact. Thankfully, there were abuse email addresses listed, so I have reported the sites, so that they are taken down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Hackers are getting crafty, and we all have to be on alert for these types of attacks. Emails aren\u2019t the only way hackers are trying to get your personal information and credit card numbers. In addition to these text messages, hackers are also pretending to call from actual corporate phone numbers, impersonating the real credit card company. If they do call you, immediately hang up. Call the number that is listed on the back of your credit card, to verify the issue. If you get a text message, don\u2019t click on the link. Simply go directly to the credit card company\u2019s website, or pick up the phone and call them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri;\">Stay
