the Health Care Industry is Ransomware&#8217;s Biggest Target"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A recent report was released stating health care organizations are 114 times more likely to be hit with ransomware&#8230;<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But why?\u00a0 There are a few perceived ideas.\u00a0 First, many health care industries run as non-profit or not-for-profit.\u00a0 This means their overall income is rather limited, and what income they do have, they don&#8217;t spend on information technology security.\u00a0 This leads the medical field to be a little &#8220;behind the times&#8221; when it comes to protection.\u00a0 This vulnerability creates a major target for ransomware attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Another perceived notion is the plethora of information the health care organizations store.\u00a0 Not only do they have patient information ranging from social security numbers and dates of birth, but also family history.\u00a0 These organizations also store payment information on their systems, which could be another target for hackers.<\/p>\n<p>A study done by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/3099852\/security\/health-care-organizations-114-times-more-likely-to-be-ransomware-victims-than-financial-firms.html?token=%23tk.CSONLE_nlt_cso_after_dark_2016-07-26&amp;idg_eid=11713482aef4550484a1c58c027bab60&amp;utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=CSO%20After%20Dark%202016-07-26&amp;utm_term=cso_after_dark#tk.CSO_nlt_cso_after_dark_2016-07-26\">Solutionary<\/a> reported that health care organizations are 114 times more likely to be hit with ransomware than financial firms.\u00a0 They&#8217;re also 21 times more likely to be targeted over educational institutions.<\/p>\n<p>So what can they do for protection?\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.us-cert.gov\/ncas\/alerts\/TA16-091A\">US-CERT<\/a> encourages individuals and businesses be\u00a0proactive and implement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmatic.com\/pro\/whitelist\">application whitelisting technology<\/a>.\u00a0 Application whitelisting blocks all unwanted and unknown programs from executing.\u00a0 This methodology\u00a0has been proven successful with blocking malware of all types, including ransomware.\u00a0 One security software that\u00a0has been using\u00a0application
